HELEN KIMMEL Obituary

KIMMEL--Helen L. The NYU Langone Health community is deeply saddened by the loss of Helen L. Kimmel, a beloved leader and benefactor of our institution for more than three decades, and a longtime supporter of New York University as a whole. Helen's strong involvement with NYU began with her first husband, Milton A. Kimmelman (1909-1984), who graduated from NYU School of Commerce in 1928. From there, Helen and Milton progressively deepened their relationship with NYU and NYU Langone Health. Both worked with NYU and Milton championed advances in rehabilitation medicine alongside Howard A. Rusk, physician founder of Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine. Helen was an NYU Langone Trustee from 1984 to 2016 and a member of the Board of Overseers until her passing. Helen herself was among the one percent of American women to attend college in the 1940s. Her lifelong love of science and math profoundly informed her philanthropy. With her second husband, the late Martin S. Kimmel, Helen established the Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Center for Stem Cell Biology and the Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Center for Biology and Medicine of the Skirball Institute of Biomolecular Medicine, among other initiatives. She endowed the Helen L. Kimmel Chair of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery; the Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Professor in Advanced Cardiac Therapeutics; and the Helen and Milton A. Kimmelman Professor of Pharmacology. In 2008, her transformational gift to name the state-of-the-art Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Pavilion catalyzed the most sweeping revitalization in NYU Langone's history. We are eternally grateful for the brilliance, insight, and great compassion she brought to her role at NYU Langone. Helen is survived by her sister, Dr. JoanBirman; her children, Betsy Karel, Abby Leigh, and Peter Kimmelman (Elbrun); her stepson, Adam Kimmel and his wife, Leelee; and her grandchildren. We extend our condolences to the entire family and to all who loved Helen. Kenneth G. Langone, Chair, Board of Trustees Robert I. Grossman, MD, Dean and CEO

Along with my colleagues at the Skirball Institute, I mourn the loss of Helen Kimmel, who, with her husband Marty, were the greatest champions of basic science at the NYU School of Medicine. Helen and Marty helped transform NYU into the world-class institution that it is today. I am enormously grateful for their generosity that made it possible for me to join NYU as the Kimmel Professor of Molecular Immunology in 1995. Then, in 2004, Helen and Marty decided to give the Skirball Institute another $10 million, to set up a program in a research area of our choosing. Along with Ruth Lehmann, we proposed using the funds to start a new Stem Cell Program, which Helen and Marty embraced and whose success they relished, so much so that, a couple of years later, when Ruth became the new Institute Director, they donated another $15 million towards recruitment packages for junior faculty. That effort was enormously successful, because Helen´s vision and her support for curiosity-driven research allowed us to recruit some of the most talented young scientists in the country. Helen´s wisdom and exquisite taste are also reflected in the design of the beautiful new NYU hospital, the Kimmel Pavilion. Helen was an inspiration to me and to many of my younger colleagues whom she befriended, and she will be greatly missed. My condolences go out to Helen´s children and grandchildren, and to her sister, Joan Birman (who was my linear algebra professor during her sabbatical at Princeton in the early 1970´s).
