HENRY WEINSTEIN Obituary

WEINSTEIN--Dr. Henry C. We're saddened by the passing of Dr. Henry C. Weinstein, on May 17, in Westchester. A nationally distinguished psychiatrist, educator, and scholar, Henry spent an extraordinary career at the intersection of law and medicine. A graduate of Columbia Law and NYU Medical School, he began clinical work at Albert Einstein College. As a professor at NYU, he directed the Program in Psychiatry and the Law and managed Bellevue Hospital's psychiatric ward for more than 20 years. At NYU, he delighted in teaching his annual class of fellows at the medical school, and teaching students at the law school. He complemented his academic work with a thriving private practice in Manhattan. Henry grew up in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, in a tight-knit extended family. He is predeceased by his sister, Sue, and survived by his wife Roz; his children Laura, Liz, and Joey; and six grandchildren. Friends will recall his love of family and good jokes; and his warmth, wit, and sparkling conversation. He was generous and always available to those who sought his medical expertise. He was passionate about the mental health of the incarcerated; a leader in defining his profession's ethical dimensions; and a mentor to a younger generation of practitioners. For those lucky to have known him, he will be missed.

Henry was a kind, generous, and decent man. He was a healer and an educator, and he took both roles very seriously. I met Henry in 1980 at an AAPL meeting. He was already an important figure in forensic psychiatry, but he took the time to make a very young psychologist feel welcome and valued. A life well lived.

Henry was one of my most cherished colleagues mentoring me in so many ways from the early 1970s when I was a freshly minted researcher with the NYS Office of Mental Health until my retirement from Policy Research Associates in 2017. I truly treasure so many things about him especially our late lunches at the coffee shop around the corner from his office when I was visiting the City from Albany on business. He made the world a better place for so many people.
