Herman Robbins

ROBBINS--Herman, M.D., Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases from 1972-1981. His Chairmanship spanned a transforming period in the hospital's history, from that of a general medical center to the mission of a specialty orthopaedic care and research institute. He was one of the pioneers who contributed to the development of pediatrics as an orthopaedic subspecialty. Dr. Robbins was one of the first American orthopaedic surgeons to observe the pioneering technique of low-friction arthroplasty of Sir John Charnley and returned to perform the surgery in the United States. He received his medical degree from the Universite de Lausanne in Switzerland in 1941. Following an internship and surgical training, he entered the Armed Services in WWll, serving as battalion surgeon in Europe, receiving a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for Heroism. Dr. Robbins served as Editor of the Bulletin of the Hospital for Joint Diseases from 1979-1991, one of the oldest orthopaedic journals in the United States. In 2005, he received the Frauenthal Medal for contributions to the Hospital. He will be remembered with admiration and respect by his patients, colleagues and by the many residents he mentored.
