HOLLY BOWER Obituary

BOWER--Holly Gwendolyn, an American still-photo- grapher, died peacefully in Switzerland on January 19, 2023. She was eighty-five years old. After suing local 644, IATSE, under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, she became the first female still- photographer in the motion picture industry. What followed was a resume that includes over forty feature films and television shows. Standing out among a list of notable credits ("Marathon Man," "Saturday Night Fever," "Kramer vs. Kramer") is Sydney Pollack's "Three Days of the Condor" during which Mr. Pollack tapped Ms. Bower to shoot the lonely, evocative photos that hang on Faye Dunaway's character's wall. Ms. Bower was a true native New Yorker -- a motorcycle-riding, loft-dwelling denizen of downtown. Later in life, a resident of the renowned Chelsea Hotel. She contracted the polio virus at four years old and continued, throughout her life, to battle its damaging effects on her legs. She did not allow this to dim her humor or limit her creative participation on many movie sets. Ms. Bower was known for her remarkable energy and indomitable spirit. She left the world on her own terms in her own way. Surviving relatives are Rebecca, Matt, Timothy, Sasha, Ariel and David.

Holly,

I miss you always and would love to have seen you once more. You were a great friend and I´m so grateful we were able to keep in touch for so many years after we both moved away from WeHo. God Bless..

Dearest Holly. I miss our frequent talks. You always knew how to make people feel special. Living as neighbors for years in WeHo was a blast and I will always cherish those days. I know that you suffered a great deal but I hope you rest peacefully in heaven. God Bless...

She was an interesting and very spirited lady. Thought I´d her just today and looked her up to find she had passed in January. My condolences. I won´t forget her.

Holly was my mom´s 1st cousin. We only spoke once late in life, but we talked for hours. I loved her free spirit, and we had that in common. No one can ever say she didn´t live her life to the fullest and in her own way.

HOLLY BOWER taught everyone around her how to expose the best of the work, to fight for the magnificent possibilities that only film is capable of displaying. She was a teacher, an artist, and brought life to a person's vision and imagination. A gifted human being whom we were blessed to work with even for the shortest of times. Thank you for your kindness to me. V/r

Thank you to the person who wrote Holly Bower's name in ALL CAPS. That's what led me to this obituary. That's why I read the story of Ms Bower's life. I'm impressed with who she was as a Human. I'm smiling.

I worked at a number of television networks and stations around New York in the 60s and 70s. Holly was always around taking great pictures for us. No one worked harder to get the shot. Always sweetened by a wisecrack. As a client, who could ask for more.
