HOPE WHIPPLE Obituary

WHIPPLE--Hope Auchincloss, 91 years old, died peacefully at home in New York City on January 21, 2021. Devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she led an active life filled with interests and hobbies. For many years she served as president of Virginia Day Nursery, a day care center for underprivileged children. She spent summers with her family in Martha's Vineyard and tended to a magnificent garden that was on many garden tours. She was a longtime member of the Edgartown Yacht Club and Edgartown Golf Club, where she won the Ladies Golf Championship eight times and greatly enjoyed serving as club secretary for over twenty years. Mrs. Whipple was an avid birdwatcher and travelled the world on birdwatching and nature expeditions. She was also a skilled bridge player at the Colony Club. She is survived by her three children Jack Whipple, George Whipple, and Susan Wald Douglas; daughters-in-law Tory and Joan, son-in-law Philip Douglas; grandchildren Carey Whipple, Clare Bergan, Kate Mitchell, Kelly Brooke, Julia and Diane Wald; and great-grandchildren Maddie, Emma, Avery, Riley, Margot, and Charlie.
