HOWARD ENDERS Obituary

ENDERS--Howard "Hank", Professor Emeritus of Film and Dramatic Writing at SUNY Purchase, died at 83 on June 18. A passionate, inspiring teacher for 30 years, he was loved by many for caring guidance and mentorship and the openness and directness of his unique personality. A writer/producer/director, with no formal college education, he created groundbreaking TV documentaries, winning Emmy, George Foster Peabody and Writers Guild awards, among others, and the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for Outstanding Coverage of the Problems of Poverty and Discrimination. At the close of WWII, as a writer on the Army paper The Daily Pacifican, he with fellow staffers issued a formal statement of objection to the military's censorship policies and discriminatory attitudes. This remained his proudest achievement. Survived by his wife, the former Valerie Medvene Dushkin, children, Georgiana, Eric, Emily and Jody; grandchildren, Nathaniel and Elizabeth Odom, and stepsons, Peter and Samuel Dushkin. A scholarship fund for young writers has been established in his name. Contributions can be made to: Purchase College Foundation/In Memory of Howard Enders, and sent to Purchase College, SUNY, 735 Anderson Hill Road, Purchase NY 10577.

Valerie, my condolences to you and your family on the loss of Hank. I was, and am, and always will be very fond of Hank as I am of you. Hank's intelligence, warmth, kindness were endearing. I am much saddened by his disappearance and shall, and already do, miss him very much. He and you have been wonderful neighbors and friends, separately and together, to my parents, my siblings and me. If you need anything, if there is anything I can do, please do not hesitate to call me. Much much love from me as well as from my family to you and yours. My thoughts are with you, as are my mother's too. Love, Judith E. Klein

Howard -- thanks for the encouragement and love you showed a young, fragile writer all those years ago. You will be missed.
