HUGH DOUGAN Obituary

DOUGAN--Hugh MacFarland. Hugh MacFarland Dougan died peacefully at home on October 22, at the age of 86. He grew up in Tenafly, NJ, and Havertown, PA, and later lived in Brooklyn Heights and Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ. A graduate of Harvard College and Columbia Law School, where he was a member of the law review, Hugh served in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps as a teacher in the JAG school in Charlottesville, VA. He then joined Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam, & Roberts in New York City, where he became a tax partner in the New York office and continued his practice with the successor firm, Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, until his retirement. Hugh was a pioneer in the area of tax-exempt project bonds, developing structuring elements that are the backbone of those financings. Hugh was a sports enthusiast: an avid golfer and long-time member of Ridgewood Country Club in Ridgewood, NJ and Ironwood Country Club in Palm Desert, CA. He had a passion for music. In his youth he played cello, but subsequently vocal music became his focus. In college, he led "Harvard's oldest informal singing group" - the Dunster Dunces - arranging and composing songs that were fixtures in the group's repertoire for years. In New Jersey, he was the founding member of a local favorite, The Last Gasp quartet, who would perform at events, charities, and hospitals. Together with his beloved wife and soulmate, Jane, Hugh was a dedicated member of New Jersey's esteemed Pro Arte Chorale, where Hugh sang bass, and they both worked tirelessly in support of the group. An exceptional lawyer. A bril- liant mind. A devoted and loving husband to both Jane and his former wife Susan. He was an adoring father and pillar of integrity. A "soul of love and brav'ry!" Hugh is survived by his wife Jane, his sister Sally, his loving son Cameron (Ann) and step-daughters Elizabeth (George) and Amanda (Tom), and many adoring grandchildren - Eli (Maren), Makayla (Connor), Jonathan, Matt, Leo, Daniel, and Andrew. We will deeply miss him. Dulce Domum. In memory of Hugh, donations may be made to Pro Arte Chorale, or Valley Hospital, both in Ridgewood, NJ.
