Hugh Galloway Obituary

Hugh was born on January 12, 1937 in New York City to Roma and Herbert Galloway, and spent his childhood in Tudor City and Pelham. He attended Yale University, where he made life-long friends and earned both a Bachelor's and Master's degree in engineering (1958, 1960).

Hugh worked as a civil engineer throughout his long career. He loved New York City and worked for the city for a number of years, notably on One Penn Plaza. He spent most of his life in New Rochelle, with interludes in California and Washington, D.C., and frequent trips to visit friends and their families in different parts of the United States and, later, Wales.

Hugh's many friends remark on his kindness. He loved spending time with them, enjoying golf, photography and dining, and attending engineering talks and musical performances. His breadth of knowledge and sharp memory made him an excellent Jeopardy companion, a formidable Scrabble player, and skillful enthusiast of the New York Times Sunday crossword.

Hugh was preceded in death by his beloved mother and father, and sister Gara Lee (Galloway) Alesch. He is survived by loving family members Noel Alesch, Clare Murray and Jeanine Alesch.

A graveside service to honor Hugh's life will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Monday, February 28, at Blackwell Cemetery in Blackwell, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Meals on Wheels.

I have no idea who Hugh is but I found his memorial bench in Davenport Park, with the best view I might add, and I felt curious enough to google him. He seemed like a great soul. RIP to Hugh and may you enjoy the eternal sunrise view.

Dear Mr. Dalles,

Thank you for your your beautiful comments.

Hugh's service was really nice. The weather was perfect!

Dog and Butterfly, Heart
New York State of Mind, Diane Schuur

We each shared memories of Hugh or read something. Hugh is loved dearly and will be greatly missed.

About our dear friend Hugh A Galloway: We met in 1966 while working on the construction of the new Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in NYC. We hit it off immediately and were close friends by the time the project was completed. Hugh became part of our family. We recall his dry wit and marveled at his ability to solve the NY Times crossword puzzle using an ink pen no less. We shared an interest in photography and spent many hours photographing NYC. Years later he visited us in Pittsburgh PA and Columbus OH where we enjoyed playing golf there. He was considered a brother to me and my wife Anna Marie. And a wonderful uncle to our children Bobby and Cindy. We are deeply saddened by his passing. We loved Hugh and will miss him dearly. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family.
