HUGH WISOFF Obituary

WISOFF--Hugh Solomon, Family patriarch, neurosurgeon, teacher, scholar, and friend, passed away March 6th, 2013, at age 85. A child of Brooklyn, son of the late Esther and Percy Wisoff, WWII Navy veteran, graduate of Union College, and Albany Medical College, Dr. Wisoff received neurosurgical training under the renowned Dr. Leo Davidoff at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. A passionate teacher who instilled high standards while training a new generation of neurosurgeons. He treated thousands of patients during a distinguished career, served as Chairman, Dept of Neurosurgery, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center retiring as Clinical Associate Professor Emeritus. Affectionately known as "Sonny" and "Snippy", Hugh was intensely curious and maintained a wide variety of interests and hobbies. A voracious reader, great problem solver, avid gardener and dependable handyman. He loved tennis, photography, and travel. He enjoyed long-lasting friendships with neighbors and colleagues. His greatest joy was family, who gathered frequently at their country home, regaling in his wisdom, sage advice, humor, and generosity. Survived by his wife, Irene Lutzky Wisoff, constant companion of 62 years, with whom he traveled the continents, photographed thousands of artistic & architectural wonders, hosted countless family gatherings. Also survived by his four children and their families: Dr. Jeffrey Wisoff, wife Deborah, daughters Jessica and Alyssa; Marshall Wisoff, wife Therese, sons Benjamin and Jeremy; Andrew Wisoff, children Joshua and Sophie; Janice Solomon, children Daniel, wife Kim ,great-grandson Miles, Aaron, Margot, and Ruth. He is survived by his brother Dr. B. George Wisoff, his wife Rebecca, and sister in law Marian Lutzky. Funeral service at Weinstein Memorial Chapel, 1652 Central Park Ave., Yonkers at 10am Fri March 8.

I was a resident at montefiore
with Hugh and we kept in touch for many years after.He was always a fine gentleman,talented dedicated surgeon and a pure pleasure to meet and talk to. I certainly
can be sure that he will be acutely missed by his family and friends.
