JAMES DUFFY Obituary

DUFFY--James H. The lawyers and staff of Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP mourn the passing of their partner, colleague and friend, James H. Duffy, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family. Prior to joining Cravath in 1959, Mr. Duffy served in the military for six months, and he was recalled to active duty in 1961. He returned to Cravath in 1962, became a partner in 1968 and retired in 1988. Mr. Duffy's practice encompassed aircraft, equipment and communications satellite lease financings, the development of various motion picture and television projects and other corporate and banking transactions. His clients included Ansett Airlines, Bank of America, the Chemical Bank predecessor of JPMorgan Chase, Janus Films, Inc., Time-Life Broadcast and the Government of Trinidad and Tobago. Mr. Duffy was a member of the American and New York State Bar Associations, as well as the Bar of the City of New York. He served as a member of the Mayor's Advisory Commission for Cultural Affairs during the administration of Mayor Edward Koch. In 1995, President Clinton named him to the Board of Directors of the Albanian-American Enterprise Fund, a government-sponsored entity to foster economic growth in Albania. In addition to serving as a director of the Fund, he was a trustee of the Albanian-American Development Foundation and a director of the American Bank of Albania. Mr. Duffy was a Life Trustee of the New York Public Library, and his other memberships included the Council on Foreign Relations and the Boards of the Alliance for the Arts, Baryshnikov Arts Center, Commonweal Foundation and School of American Ballet. Mr. Duffy was born in Lowville, NY. He received an A.B. magna cum laude from Princeton University in 1956, where he was a Senior Editor of the Daily Princetonian and research assistant to Professor Alpheus Thomas Mason in connection with his biography of Chief Justice Harlan Fiske Stone, and an LL.B. cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1959. Contributions in honor of Mr. Duffy may be made to the School of American Ballet, 70 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York, NY 10023, or to the Baryshnikov Arts Center, 450 W. 37th St., Suite 501, New York, NY 10018.

Thank you for your wonderful enthusiasm which you shared so generously. I knew you so briefly, but a favorite memory...being with you and Martha at the Biennale de Venise long ago, breakfast at the hotel Cipriani, meals with lots of wine and laughter, talking of art...No doubt you were a blessing to so many others besides me.
