JANE BUTLER Obituary

BUTLER--Jane Hays.

Lifelong Greenwich Village resident, died April 27, 2016, age 91. Mrs. Butler graduated City and Country School and attended Syracuse University and Vesper George School of Art. She served as Chair of the International Choral Festival for Lincoln Center, Vice Chairman of Friends of Channel 13 (WNET), and consultant/guide at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mrs. Butler was the daughter of Aline Davis Hays, artist and textile designer, and Arthur Garfield Hays, co-founder of the ACLU and general counsel starting in 1920. She was wife of William J. Butler, who argued the "school prayer case" before the US Supreme Court. Mrs. Butler is survived by her husband, her son Arthur (Dr. Judith Childs) and daughter Patricia Whitehill (John), and grandchildren Caitlin and Sean Butler (Emily De La Cerda) and Cassandra Breneman (Zachary), and several nieces and nephews.
