JANE-HOWARD HAMMERSTEIN Obituary

HAMMERSTEIN-- Jane-Howard Holderness. December 16, 1934 - January 15, 2022. Jane-Howard Holderness Hammerstein passed away in her sleep January 15, 2022 at the age of 87 at Danbury Hospital. Jane-Howard was magical. She could turn anything into something beautiful. She loved art, music, travel and animals. She was heavily involved in politics her whole life, from picketing for civil rights outside Woolworths in 1960 to actively fundraising for Obama. In her 20s, she represented North Carolina at the Brussels World's Fair, where she had the time of her life learning new languages and travelling. She immersed herself when she travelled and always appreciated good food and wine. Jane-Howard left the south behind her, along with the accent, and headed out to pave her own road through New York, London and Connecticut. Once settled at her current Connecticut home after Bill (Willie) died, her household, family and incredible friends filled her life with joy. Jane-Howard was brilliant with words and made her living as a writer. She and her first husband co-wrote the scripts for the films Wait Until Dark and Kaleidoscope. She won a Writers Guild of America Award and was nominated for a primetime Emmy award for her work on Long Road Home, a TV drama. She also wrote the Humanitas Award-winning Summer of my German Soldier for TV. Jane-Howard was born December 16, 1934 in Greensboro, NC. She was predeceased by her husband William Hammerstein, her father William Henry Holderness, her mother Martha Broadhurst Brooks, and her brother William Henry Holderness Jr. She is survived by her step-mother Brent Holderness Elmore, her sister, Brent Holderness Immurs, and brothers Charles Holderness, Hayes Holderness and Thomas Holderness. She also leaves behind her two precious dogs, Teddy and Swee'Pea, and her cherished friends. Jane-Howard was a champion of all animals, and always kept a house full of loving dogs. In lieu of flowers, she would have appreciated donations to Beautifultogethersanctuary. com or your favorite charity. Please contact a family member if you would like to attend a virtual celebration of Jane-Howard's life on January 30th.

I am an EMT on the Washington Ambulance and helped transport Jane to the hospital where she passed. It was clear that Jane was a special lady and appreciated the care of those around her. I am sorry for your loss.
