Jane Young PhD

YOUNG--Jane Jaffe, Ph.D. Professor of English at the Borough of Manhattan Community College, where, for 43 years, she taught composition, literature, and film. As chapter chair of the faculty union, the Professional Staff Congress, since 2001, she advocated effectively for the rights of her colleagues and was chosen Member of the Year for Higher Education by the New York State United Teachers in 2007. A freelance writer and poet, she published articles in academic journals and in New York Magazine, the Village Voice, the Daily News, and Newsday. At the age of nineteen, she won the Mayoral Poetry Award for her poem "Kaleidescope," along with now-famous author Erica Jong. Her book, D.H. Lawrence on Screen, studied the ways in which filmmakers adapted the stylistic elements of "The Rocking-Horse Winner," Sons and Lovers, and Women in Love to Lawrence's literary style. Critic John Simon wrote that "her conclusions are of equal value to Lawrence scholars, film students, and all others who care about film and fiction and their fascinating interplay." She graduated from the High School of Music and Art, received her B.A. degree Phi Beta Kappa from the City College of New York, earned a master's degree at Harvard University, and completed her Ph.D. at New York University. She died at home surrounded by loving family and friends. She is survived by her life partner, Phil Eggers, daughter Victoria Young Salganik, son-in-law Jonas Salganik, granddaughter Natasha Rose Salganik, stepson David Eggar, stepdaughter Cynthia Wendy Eggers Butler and husband Sean Butler, and stepson Michael Eggers. A service will be held at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street, on Sunday, April 12 at 2:30pm.
