JEFFREY APPLEGATE Obituary

APPLEGATE--Jeffrey M. prominent Wall Street investment strategist and market prognosticator for four decades, passed away at his New York City home on September 4th. He was 71. Beginning as a political analyst in the mid-1970s at H.C. Wainwright & Co., Jeff Applegate quickly grasped the Washington-Wall Street dynamic. From that point, his career unfolded, moving from Washington, DC to New York City, amidst the political-economic rollercoaster of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, continuously challenging his skills as a forward-looking and intuitive money manager. Ultimately, Jeff became one of the most highly respected, influential and oft- quoted investment pundits in the country. Most recently, Jeff served as Chief Investment Officer at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney and, earlier, at Citigroup Global Wealth Management and Franklin Templeton. Previously, he led investment strategy at Lehman Brothers and Credit Suisse. He also held senior positions at Shearson Lehman Hutton, E.F. Hutton and Smith Barney. He was a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts and the CFA Institute. Incredibly well-rounded, his many personal interests led him to become an adventurous traveler, avid art collector and discerning oenophile, while he also shared the rewards of his success as a generous patron of the arts and supporter of many liberal social, political and environmental charities. Jeffrey Michael Applegate was born on April 21, 1950 in Trenton, NJ to Frank White and Joan Beverly (Schlicker) Applegate. Jeff's early life was spent in Westfield, NJ and Kennett Square, PA. He earned a B.A. in International Studies from American University, Washington, DC and a B. Litt. in Politics at Oxford University, England. Jeff is survived by his husband, Anton Kotiagin; his brother Christopher Applegate (Genie) and their son Austen; his niece Lisa Applegate (Douglas Blunck) and their son Max; his nephew Brian Applegate and two adult godchildren, Alexis Chaudron and Gianni Barbera, to whom he was deeply devoted. He is also mourned by a legion of longtime close friends and professional colleagues. Jeff requested to be cremated and that there be no funeral service. However, a celebration of his life is to be planned for a future date when there are fewer health risks and restrictions. Donations may be made in Jeff's memory to: Robin Hood Foundation, 826 Broadway, 9th Floor, New York, NY 10003, (212)227-6601; or Lambda Legal, 120 Wall Street, 19th Floor, New York, NY 10005. I don't know what to say-he was such a unique person! I knew Jeff early on from the Church of the Advent in Kennett Square, PA right up to graduation day at Kennett high school in 1968!

He had such an influence on the world!

I interviewed with in 1983 and we didn't separate until 2013. He taught me everything about what a good boss could be/should be, "I was his ride or die chick". And I miss him...There wasn't a year after 2013 that he and I did not speak. We lost a really good guy.

Just learned of Jeff´s passing. Great guy. Knew him as a student at American Univ.. and Oxford while at and visited him at Oxford. During that time, before he became famous, he worked with Washington Workshops where I had the privilege of knowing him as one of the students. Always down to earth with a personable nature. Blessings to you, Jeffrey.

I met Jeffrey at American University in 1968, our freshman year. I was taken by his intelligence, good looks, sophistication, and sense of humor.
Yes, I was smitten. Jeffrey was "cool"! We had many good times and He will be in my heart forever.
