JOE ENGLE Obituary

ENGLE--Joe R., 87, New York City, died January 17, 2010. Born January 26, 1922 in Coshocton, OH, he was the son of the late Perry L. and Georgia R. Engle. Mr. Engle was a graduate of the Ohio State University where he currently sat on the Ohio State Foundation Board and the Harvard Business School. He also served as the engineering officer aboard an LST in WWII. He was a manufacturer's representative for his entire business career and a cofounder of the Loctite Corporation in Hartford, CT. Mr. Engle was a lifelong Presbyterian and one of his great interests was theological education. He was endowed three chairs in homiletics at Princeton Theological Seminary and also a chair in homiletics at Union Theological Seminary in New York on whose board he had served for nine years. At Princeton's Seminary he also endowed the Joe R. Engle Institute of Preaching whereby each summer 50 young preachers are brought back to campus and provided with an intense refresher course to improve their preaching skills. It is now in its seventh year. Mr. Engle also had a lifelong interest in scholarships for needy students for Coshocton County, Ohio with a preference for first generation college students to attend the Ohio State University. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth, a stepson, Dr. Graham Barr, both of New York City; a sister, Mary E. Ehrich, and a nephew, Dr. William Ehrich, both of Bloomington, IN. Memorial service with Reverend John Walton officiating, Saturday, January 30th at 4pm at the First Presbyterian Church, 12 West 12th St. (at 5th Ave., and 12th St.) In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice or to the Engle Institute of Preaching at Princeton Theological Seminary.
