JOHN BLASS Obituary

BLASS--Dr. John P. Dr. John P. Blass, age 86, renowned neurological researcher, professor, and doctor died March 12, 2023. Born in Austria in 1937, his family escaped the Nazis in 1939. After college at Harvard, he earned a Ph.D. in London as a Marshall Scholar, and his M.D. from Columbia. He led the Burke Neurological Institute from its founding in 1978, breaking ground in the role of metabolism in Alzheimer's Disease. Dr. Blass was recognized with many accolades. Chair of the National Panel on Alzheimer's Disease, Chair of committees in the National Institute on Aging, Chair of the President's HHS Task Force on Alzheimer's Disease, editor of scientific journals on aging, metabolism and neurology. He wrote textbooks on neurology and numerous scientific articles. He founded IDEO Skincare to translate his discoveries in the role of metabolism from treating Alzheimer's to treating aging concerns in the skin, making his work visible to the eye. His contribution to neurological research will not be forgotten. He will be remembered for his warmth, a human touch with patients, and his passion for sailing and history. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Gitte, a son, Charlie, and predeceased by a daughter, Lisa.
