John Patrick Carroll

John Patrick Carroll, of New York, NY, died on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, after a brief illness. He was 58 years old.

Born on October 24, 1962, in the Bronx, NY, John was a proud, life-long New Yorker. He graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1980 and from New York University in 1984. He worked for a number of years in the paper industry; first at Abitibi Price (now Resolute Forest Products) and then the Madden Corp. (now UPM-Kymmene Oyj). In the mid-1990s he made a life-changing and rewarding career move into international publishing. He was a senior executive at three major scientific publishers: Elsevier, the Nature Publishing Group (now Springer-Nature) and John Wiley & Sons. John was always a generous colleague, a good friend, and a wonderful mentor to thousands.

John loved his family and delighted in watching it grow and flourish. Traveling and seeing new places was dear to him, but most of all, he loved New York City and all it offered – history, architecture, parks, concerts, plays, films, museums, and restaurants. He was a caring neighbor and leader in his Washington Heights co-op building where he lived for more than three decades.

John is survived by his husband and partner of 30 years, Peter I. Fifield, and his sister, Ellen (John) Conn, of Yorktown Heights, NY; and three nieces, a nephew, a grandniece, and a grandnephew. His mother, Anna M. Evans, and his sister, Ann Marie Carroll, predeceased him. A memorial service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to The Met Cloisters, Fort Tryon Park Trust, Hetrick-Martin Institute or an organization of your choosing.
