John Considine Obituary

1950 - 2015
John Joseph Considine, born September 20, 1950, lived a joyful life of service to his faith, his family, and his community. He passed on February 12, 2015 at the age of 64.

John joins his parents, William and Eileen Considine of Ozone Park, Queens, NY, and his father– and mother-in-law, Francis and Eileen Holleran of Morristown, NY, in heaven.

John was born and raised in New York City and graduated from Fordham University. In 1974, he joined the United States Customs Service and was assigned to an inspector's post on the Canadian border in Champlain, NY. There he met the love of his life, Maureen Holleran, a fellow Customs Inspector. John transferred to a post in Washington, D.C. in 1988 where he served in numerous capacities, including the Director of the Commercial Processing Division. He ended his career as the Custom and Border Protection attaché to the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa, Canada. John received numerous awards recognizing his accomplished and dedicated service.

Following his career with Customs and Border Protection, John joined the firm Sandler, Travis, and Rosenburg, P.A., where he served as a consultant until October 2014.

John was a calm and peaceful man to all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. He possessed a warm heart that drew many people to him from all walks of life. When someone in his community was in need, John was there, offering support in any way he could. Throughout his 64 years, John's warmth, as well as a contagious laugh and sense of humor, provided family and friends with fond memories.

John was an avid reader of books, newspapers, and online sources – even the most obscure – often sending his children items of interest. He spent many summers at his camp on the St. Lawrence River, enjoying river views and time with his family.

He is survived by his spouse of 38 years, Maureen, and his children, Colleen, Padraic, Mary Brigid, and Caitrin. His family could not have asked for a more incredible husband and father. John delighted in taking his family on excursions to museums, zoos, the theater, and sought to provide them with a variety of rich experiences throughout life. He was a consistent and supportive presence at his children's hockey, lacrosse, softball, and volleyball games that sometimes required rising at the earliest of morning hours or driving long distances.

The family will receive friends at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home in Fairfax, VA on Thursday, February 19th from 4pm to 8pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Andrews the Apostle Catholic Church in Clifton, VA on Friday, February 20th at 11am.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to one of Maureen and John's favorite places - the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Litchfield, CT (www.shrinect.org). For those who are able, the family asks that you please consider donating blood to make a difference in the life of someone as special as John.

Dear Maureen and Family,
It seems so many years since we all came together at Champlain. John made working there so much more pleasant. Though we haven't been in touch over the past few years, there has always been a special place in my heart for all of you. His gentle personality will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

My heart goes out to Maureen and her family. Although I had met John only once through Maureen during a work function, he was sweet and kind towards me. Maureen, I'm sad to hear of your husband's passing. We had many good talks.. and your advice was always welcomed, exactly what I needed and felt God's words through you. I miss you very much and I wish God's healing to your heart.
Love, Donna Leone

I am very saddened to hear of John's passing, please accept my heartfelt condolences. I had the honor and privilege to work for him in Ottawa. He was there for only 4 months or so after my arrival, but he left a lasting impression on me of a kind, intelligent and caring person. And he was a great boss. Sincerely, Maureen Blanchard

It is with great sadness that I heard of John's passing. We, kind of, grew up together via St. Mary Gate of Heaven elementary school, playing sandlot football behind Adams on Sundays throughout high school, read books and rode bikes together, discovered FM radio
together, even competed for the same first girlfriend, one of the only times I came out ahead. We shared challenges and celebrated accomplishments together. My journey through life has been measurably sweetened by those early years with John and I am forever grateful. His beautiful obit is a tribute to him surpassed only by his family which is his living legacy. My condolence. Peace.

My wife and I are so very sorry to hear of John's passing. I've known John. from afar, for many years through Matt and Bill and my wife remembers a great conversation they had while she was visiting Litchfield one year. I remember John for his great sense of humor and being the athletic one of the Considine brothers. We know how difficult a time this is for you and your family is in our prayers. Peace
