JOHN DODGE Obituary

DODGE--John Bowden.

We are greatly saddened by the death of John BowdenDodge of Harbour Ridge in Palm City, FL and Whitefield, NH. He died November 6, 2017, with his beloved wife Lore Moran Dodge, her family, and his devoted caregiver Yuliya De Silva, by his side. John was born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 14, 1931, the son of Frank Schuyler Dodge and Mary Bowden Dodge. He graduated from Deerfield Academy and Dartmouth College in 1953 with an AB degree and Cornell University, School of Hotel Management in 1957. During the Korean War, John served in the United States Army as Private First Class from 1953-1955. During the winter months he went to Arizona to manage the Sky Chef division of American Airlines in Scottsdale, the Casa Blanca in Scottsdale, the San Marcus Hotel in Chandler, CharlieFarrell's Racquet Club in Palm Springs, California and the Townhouse in Rochester, New York. During his illustrious career he developed numerous golf course communities in Florida, North Carolina, New Hampshire and on the island of St. Croix. His love of the hospitality industry began by working at his family's well-known historic hotel The Mountain View House in Whitefield, NH. The pride and joy of his entire career, though, was the golf course community of Harbour Ridge, where he will be remembered by the John Dodge Four Ball Tournament every April. Harbour Ridge was purposely chosen by John for its proximity to the St. Lucie River's North Fork for its beauty. He served on the Boards of Bessemer Trust Company of Florida and the Bessemer Trust Company NA. He was Chairman of the Board of Burnham Corporation of Lancaster, PA, and President of the Board of the 400 Building in Palm Beach, FL and the Kravis Center of the Arts where he is a Life Trustee and past Board Member. John also served as a Board member as well as Chairman of the Board of the Community Foundation of Palm Beach and Martin Counties. He oversaw the construction of the Foundation's new building when it was erected in 2001. He served on the recreation council of the Urban Land Institute for over 25 years. He was an enthusiastic supporter of local charities including; Hope Rural School in Indiantown, FL and his two churches - the Community Baptist Church of Whitefield, NH and the First Unitarian Church in North Palm Beach, FL. John was an avid skier, tennis player and most of all hiker of the Presidential Range in the White Mountains. One of his greatest accomplishments was the ascent of Mt. Kilimanjaro in 1986 at the age of 55. John was a thoughtful and creative builder of properties, with a conscious effort to preserve wildlife and the environment. He earned the developer of the year award two years in a row by the Audubon Society of Florida and was an active member of the Urban Land Institute. He cared about marine life, loved to dive and explore on his boat the "Lorelei". He served on the boards of the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in Fort Pierce, Florida and the Florida Oceanographic Society on Hutchinson Island, FL. He is survived by his wife Lore Moran Dodge, his children David S. Dodge, Deborah D. Cash and Jonathan D. Dodge and four grandchildren. He will be greatly missed and remembered for his amazing positive energy and wonderful smile. John was an exquisite gentleman and always thought only the best of everyone. He was one of New Hampshire's finest sons. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to support Dr. Dennis Selkoe's Alzheimer's research at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Checks can be made payable to Brigham and Women's Hospital with "in memory of John Dodge" in the memo line and sent to: Brigham and Women's Hospital, Development Office, 116 Huntington Ave., 3rd floor, Boston, MA 02116.
