JOHN FRIEDMAN Obituary

FRIEDMAN--John M., 66 years old, a lawyer, woodworker, and mathematician, died on March 17, 2011, in Connecticut, after a long and courageous struggle with pulmonary fibrosis. He lived in Roxbury, CT. Friedman graduated from Princeton University in 1966, and received a masters degree from University of Sussex and a law degree from the University of Chicago in 1970. He was a partner in the law firm of Dewey, Ballantine, where he spent 25 years. In 1996 he retired and became a full time resident of Litchfield County, CT. Over the next 15 years he served as Chairman of the Board of The Washington Montessori School, Chairman of the Federation Foundation of the Jewish Communities of Western Connecticut, Vice President of the Federation and served on various community boards. Friedman was multi-dimensional: he wrote a math column for The Litchfield County Times, was an avid fly fisherman and took great pride in his woodworking. Friedman is survived by his wife, Judith, his sons David and Michael, his daughter Julia and his sister Tonni. The funeral will be held on Monday, March 21, 2011 at 11am at B'nai Israel, Southbury, CT. Always a kind word, a ready wit, a friendly smile, and wisdom on tap - that is how we remember John. His passing leaves a wide gap but his legacy to those who knew and loved him, even as he fought uphill against heavy odds, should provide some measure of solace in easing the irreplaceable loss..
Our thoughts are with Judith and Julia, David, Michael and Tonni.

Although an adversary in bankruptcy cases, John was always a mentor to me when I was a young associate. I have fond memories of our discussions together. What a great, kind person and what an intellect! I will always remember his infectious laughter. Judith, our thoughts are with you.

John was a good friend and colleague – a man of many talents, with a ready wit and a warm sense of humor. I remember speaking with him about mathematics and philosophy as he worked on converting the former maid’s room in his New York City apartment into a woodworking shop. My sincere sympathy goes to Judith, Julia, David, Michael and the other members of John’s family.

One of the smartest, most giving people I will ever meet.
Thinking of you, Judith & Julia.
