JON DICKINSON Obituary

DICKINSON--Jon M., born in New York on April 12, 1938, died on April 29, 2025. Jon attended Cornell University, where he earned degrees in Electrical Engineering and Law. After completing his law degree, Jon moved to Portland, Oregon in 1964, where he joined the intellectual property law firm of Kolisch Hartwell. Over the next 40 years, Jon worked for clients of all sizes, sole inventors, start-up and established companies; over a broad range of legal topics involving patents, trademarks, and copyrights. Jon mentored numerous young patent attorneys in their early years of private practice, always challenging others to push the envelope of possibilities and think outside the box. He helped clients obtain crucial patents, and argued cases before the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. After a brief fling with retirement, Jon's beloved clients beckoned him back to a thriving solo practice from 2004 to 2014. In addition to pursuing his career in law, Jon was a believer in the power of art and was an advocate for many young artists. He loved music as a performer, promoter, and listener and established himself as a practicing musical and visual artist. Jon, together with luthier Paul Schuback, over a period of nearly 20 years, handmade a full quartet of matched string instruments, a cello, viola, and two violins. Jon was always with a video camera, and when exploring filmmaking, he became an auteur. He did everything - wrote scripts, produced, filmed, and edited his own pictures, and short movies. Jon is survived by his wife Marlene Burns, his son Jon (JD) Dickinson, Jr., and daughter Joanne Dickinson. Memorial Contributions in Jon's name may be made to: Chamber Music Northwest (cmnw.org/give) or Oregon Historical Society (ohs.org/support/index.cfm).

I did not know Jon Dickenson, but it seems he led a great life and I appreciate his support for chamber music. My condolences to his family, from a fellow Cornellian, Arts' 64, and lawyer.
