MAFFIA--Joseph Alexander. We announce with great sorrow the passing of Joseph Maffia, CPA, CGMA, on August 15 at 66 years old. Joseph passed peacefully at home in New York City, leaving behind a legacy of professional distinction and deep personal connections with family and friends. Over four decades, Joseph built a remarkable career in public accounting, starting his own firm then serving as Partner at Janover LLC and Managing Director at Armanino LLP. He held positions in key organizations such as NASBA, FASB and NY State Board of Accountancy, making notable contributions to the industry and audit innovation. He was also a devoted educator during his 20 years as an adjunct lecturer, influencing countless students at Hunter College and Mercy College. Joseph was deeply engaged in civic activities, including a candidacy for the New York State Assembly in 2022 and serving on boards like Manhattan's Community Board 5 and as Treasurer for New Dramatists. He dedicated himself to advocating for transparency, fiscal accountability, and the arts. Outside of his career, Joseph had a diverse range of interests from martial arts to opera. He was a NYC triple jump champion and celebrated graffiti artist, famously known as the "King of the One Train," with a passion for art, music, and sports. Joseph was a man of great complexity and contradictions; he was ebullient yet shy, utterly charming yet mischievous. A devout Catholic with a sharp wit and irreverent humor, he was admired for his sincere and steadfast character. His unexpected passing leaves a void among those who cherished him. He is survived by his beloved wife MJ, daughters Jessie and Michelle, grandson Liam, sister Roma, brother Maurice, and many dear family and friends. Joseph's profound impact and cherished memories will continue to inspire all who knew him. A memorial service will be held at 9am on October 4th at St. Patrick's Cathedral. In lieu of flowers, donations to New Dramatists Society, The Humane Society, NY Center for Living, or The Boys and Girls Club of Harlem are requested in his memory, honoring his dedication to education and community service. Although Joseph is gone, his spirit--lively and free--will never be forgotten.
