JOSEPH MURPHY

MURPHY--Joseph M. The Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons mourns the passing of Joseph M. Murphy, a devoted friend, benefactor, and longtime member of the Board of Advisors, whose decades of leadership and thoughtfulness were crucial to the growth and success of our Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center. He and his wife, the late JoAnn M. Murphy, were the pioneering founders of the Center's Diabetes Advisory Board. In addition, the Murphys established the Christopher J. Murphy Memorial Professorship of Diabetes Research at the Berrie Center, and supported diabetes research through the Columbia Center for Translational Immunology. Mr. Murphy honored his wife's memory and their partnership with Columbia by establishing the JoAnn M. Murphy Memorial Professorship in the Department of Otolaryngology- Head & Neck Surgery. The Murphys' contributions have helped to advance patient care, research, and the education and training of future physicians, and their support continues to improve lives and shape the future of medical care. We will miss his warmth, wise counsel, and sense of humor. Mr. Murphy was predeceased by his wife and their son Christopher. He is survived by his children Joseph Jr., Carolyn, Mary, and Patricia; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. We extend our deepest condolences to them and to the entire extended Murphy family. P.
