Hi, Joe!
Joe Sweeney

It is rare to meet someone like "Captain Joe"...a few decades difference in age only meant that he had that many more good stories to tell as we passed the hours together for so many years. I consider myself fortunate to have shared his friendship and far too many Indian buffets.

Although older than I Joe was indeed a true friend. We shared many memorable experiences over the years. I will always remember his stories, laugh, generosity and smile. I consider myself lucky to have known him.

I enjoyed the many years gone by sailing with Joe. He was interesting to talk to about technology, politics and people. He was smart and generous. We had added closeness and fun dining in his favorite restaurants. I was happy to help him get around as time took its toll on his abilities. We worked on a couple of computer projects together that gave us both great satisfaction with successful outcomes. I am sure Joe is again sailing with his best pal Dominic and being as good a friend in heaven as he was here.

Joe was an expert sailor and power boat operator who did not miss the finer points of either.

Though I met him but a few times, his genial manner made one feel like a life-long friend. Would that we all could embrace his loving life style. RIP. John Murray (Tom Murray's Dad)

JOE WAS A SAILING BUDDY WHO COULD WRITE ABOUT HIS SALTY CRUISING EXPERIENCES WITH LITERATE, COLORFUL language.

He was a very special person, my Uncle Joe. He is missed but leaves us with many fond memories; his laugh, his sailboat, his ability to teach us so much about so many things.

The name of the boat was "Happy Days"

My dad loved kids and truly enjoyed life. He was the best weekend father a kid could possibly have. He was my great buddy. Discipline? Responsibility? That would have to wait for adulthood. There just wasn't enough time in a weekend to put a damper on the fun. For the first 18 years of my life we went skiing in the winter; boating in the summer; horseback riding, camping and hiking in the spring and fall; museums, Broadway plays, a summer in Europe – life was good, and I always felt blessed and deeply loved. My surrogate brother during these early years with my dad was my cousin Ira. We both share an unspoken bond of that wonderful time in our lives. As Ira and I joked with him around his death bed, he loved it – and so did we. Having lived through the depression, my dad considered himself a survivor, and he did his best to dissuade me from a career in music. One day, I responded to him with: “Sure dad – you pay the $9 and I'll take the computer test.” Whatever modicum of stability I have experienced as an adult, I owe to that moment of gentle persuasion. Then my sister was born, and she became the light of his life for the next 18 years. I knew how unconditional his love was, and I know how lucky we both were to have him as our dad.
