JULIA EVANS Obituary

EVANS--Julia Hunt. 1937-2025 Julia Hunt Evans (Richer), of Sherman, CT, passed away peacefully on September 5, 2025, of natural causes. Beloved daughter of Catharine B. Evans and Gordon K. Evans, she was born in 1937 and raised in New York City. She attended the Brearley School and was honored at the Debutante Ball of the New York Junior League during the 1955-56 season and served as a member. She graduated with honors from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, and went on in her professional life to work at TIME Magazine. During her career at TIME, she worked her way up to the position of photo editor, editing images and researching stories for the World and International editions. During this turbulent era, from the late 1970s though the mid 1990s, she was tasked with sending photo journalists around the globe to cover news worthy stories including the conflict in El Salvador, Beirut, famine in Ethiopia, Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990-91, in the Persian Gulf and the fall of the Soviet Union, to name a few. She was also tasked with selecting images from these assignments to run in the weekly edition of TIME. She traveled internationally for several world events, including to the Philippines to edit film for the book Bayan Ko!, which chronicled the transition of power from the regime of Ferdinand Marcos to Corazon Aquino in 1986 and had the honor of meeting Corazon Aquino during this assignment. After retiring, she spent her time in the quiet woods surrounding her home in Connecticut, pursuing her passion for gardening, knitting beautiful and intricate sweaters, enjoying her numerous dogs, following the news and doing the New York Times crossword puzzles. Julia is survived by her son, Paul B. Richer and daughter Susanna L. Richer and will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have experienced her wisdom and spirited personality.
