The trustees and staff of The Museum of Modern Art are deeply saddened by the death of our admired and beloved colleague Jytte Jensen, who was a Curator in the Department of Film. Jytte joined MoMA in 1982 as a Research Assistant in the Circulating Film Library, was officially hired in 1984 as a Curatorial Assistant, and rose to become Curator in the Department of Film and Media (now the Department of Film) in 2003. Throughout her career at MoMA, her pioneering exhibitions and publications ranged from Cinema Novo in Brazil to the experimental cinema of the Arab world. She organized numerous surveys of international film, retrospectives of individual artists, and programs of experimental and independent American cinema, with highlights including annual programs such as Premiere Brazil! (2003-12) and Global Lens (2003-13); Prix Jean Vigo (2006), a yearlong celebration of French film; Big as Life: An American History of 8mm Films (1998-99), the three-part Mapping Subjectivity series (2010?12), which explored Arab cinema since the late 1960s;Discovering Georgian Cinema (2014); and monographic retrospectives on Bernardo Bertolucci (2010), B?la Tarr (2001), Abbas Kiarostami (2007), and Pier Paolo Pasolini (2013), among others. She was a member of the selection committee for New Directors/New Films, the annual collaboration between The Film Society of Lincoln Center and The Museum of Modern Art. A native of Denmark, Jytte earned an MA in Cinema Studies from New York University. Her publications include Benjamin Christensen: An International Dane (1999), "Four Decades of Brazilian Cinema" in Cinema Novo and Beyond (1998), and monographs on Carl Th. Dreyer (1994) and Bela Tarr (2001), as well as interviews and articles for newspapers in the U.S. and abroad. In addition, Jytte participated on several international festival juries, including those of the Oberhausen, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, and Sundance festivals.
