KATHERINE BRANDT Obituary

BRANDT--Katherine E., died at home in Charlottesville, VA on August 4, 2019 under the care of her family with the expert guidance of the University of Virginia Palliative Care Clinic. She was 54. Beloved wife of Kimberly D. Acquaviva and devoted mother of Greyson K. Acquaviva. Survivors include sister-in-law Terri Brandt McGrath (James), father-in-law Philip C. Acquaviva (Virginia Bertrand), sister-in-law Jennifer (Acquaviva) Bass (Warren), brother Theodore L. Brandt (Selena), BFFs Gary Gardia (Dennis McClure) and Kathleen Taylor, and countless family members and friends. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents Ann Lowden Brandt and Robert Eugene Brandt, and much-loved aunts Mary Lowden and Betty Lowden Hansford. A graduate of Mount Holyoke College (1987), Kathy championed hospice and palliative care for more than 30 years, working to improve timely access to quality care. Among her many accomplishments, she was the author and editor of the NCP Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care, 4th edition. She was a member of Friends Meeting of Washington and a longtime volunteer with Capitol Hill Scouts Troop 500. A Memorial Meeting for Worship will be held October 26th at 2:00pm at Friends Meeting of Washington. From the time Kathy was diagnosed with clear cell ovarian cancer six months ago, she was clear with her family that the cause of death should be listed as the Trump Presidency in her obituary. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to whichever candidate secures the Democratic nomination even if you really wish someone better were running.

Kathy was one of the first "hospice " people I met when I began working in hospice care in the 1980s. Bright, delightful individual. It saddens me that the world of hospice and palliative care has lost one of the leaders. And each of you has lost someone you love. She came as a consultant to our office before I retired. I send love and prayers to each of you. She made a difference in this world. Kathryn

Although I never had the honor of meeting Katherine I am a Family Ambassador along with her wife Kim for Greyson's school, Emerson College. I am also a stage 3 breast cancer survivor so I can only say that Katgerines bravery in dealing with her cancer diagnosis humbled me. I know that Gods light is upon her and she clearly gave so much to the universe through her advocacy for those in Hospice care. I promise that I will donate generously to every Democratic campaign in her name so that 45 is not reelected. ♥

Kathy and I traveled in many of the same Hospice circles and although we did not know each other well I respected her work tremendously. May peace, love and laughter echo loudly each day. I too will pledge as she requested and pray that she gathers all the angels to help us in this next election.

I have just seen Katherine's obituary today after so many months, and I salute her as a fellow uncommon woman from MHC and praise her for requesting her family and friends list Trump as the cause of her death. My sympathy to those of you who have lost such a fine person who clearly is gone too soon.

Didn't know Katherine Brandt, but, after reading her funny and challenging obit, I wish I had known her. I've sent it to everyone I know who yearns for ABT -- Anybody But Trump -- and I pledge to do as she asked when the time comes. Fly on, Katherine Brandt, and thanks for going out with such spirit.

She must have been a very special person. A friend sent me the obituary because of the final words but as a 26 year ovarian cancer survivor, I found the work she did to be very impressive too. I will follow her request once there is a candidate.

Like others, I'm here because I read your obituary in the NYT this morning. Kathy, oh how I wish I had known you in real life! I've already given token amounts of money to 5 or 6 Dem candidates, because I want to hear the dialogue between them. In your memory, I will give the maximum allowed to whoever secures the nomination.

Kathy will be missed. She spent her entire life putting others first. Note how her obituary that she wrote, spent much space mentioning her loved ones. He coup de grace is her command to remember her by working and sending money to replace the current US president.
