KATHRYN ABBE

ABBE--Kathryn, photographer, died peacefully at her home in Brookville, NY, on January 18 at age 94. Born in Brooklyn, she graduated from Pratt Institute in 1941 and began a 70-year career as a professional photographer. Her subjects included fashion icons, children, personalities, and artists. Her photographs are in the permanent collections of the Akron Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, Guild Hall Museum, the International Center of Photography, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She was co-author of two books on her favorite subjects of twins and photography. She was pre-deceased by her husband, photographer and antiques dealer James Abbe, Jr. (1912-1999). Known to her family as Fuffy, she was an inspiration and a mentor for young artists, including students at Friends Academy, where she served as trustee. She also served as clerk of Jericho Friends Meeting. She is survived by her twin sister, Frances McLaughlin-Gill, a daughter, Lucinda Abbe, her sons, Thomas Abbe and Eli Abbe, a stepson, James Abbe III, a niece, Leslie Gill, and five grandchildren.
