KLAUS EPPLER Obituary

EPPLER--Klaus. Klaus Eppler, age 93, died peacefully at home on January 30, 2024. Klaus was born in Berlin in 1930 and immigrated to New York in 1938 with his parents Eugene and Edith Eppler, to escape Nazi Germany. Klaus attended Midwood High School and received his BA from Union College where he was valedictorian and where he started dating Joyce Levine, a student at Skidmore College. He attended Yale Law School, where he was an editor of the Yale Law Journal. In 1954 he graduated from Yale, married Joyce, and returned with her to West Berlin to serve in U.S. Army intelligence work. In 1956 Klaus joined the law firm of Pros-kauer, Rose, Goetz, and Mendelsohn, and proudly considered the firm his professional family and home. A partner in the Corporate Division, in which he served as co-chair, he was still an engaged "optional service partner" at the time of his death. He was nationally known as a leading securities law practitioner, and chaired continuing legal education courses for more than 30 years. He was elected president of New York County Lawyers Association and through NYCLA and subsequent appointments to chair a state commission, he worked to support legal services to indigent criminal defendants. He did everything to the highest standards and inspired excellence in everyone around him. Much as he took pleasure and pride in his work, his greatest love was for his family and there was nothing more important to him than spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. He was generous and devoted to those he loved and took pride in all of his family; no matter what path they chose his support was unconditional and absolute. His care at home of his beloved wife Joyce in her decade of decline with Alzheimer's was an inspiration to all who witnessed it. With a never-ending enthusiasm for life, he took great pleasure in travel, mountains, music, and chocolate, and in his decades-long friendships. Absolutely and stubbornly one of a kind, his strength of body and character made him seem close to immortal, and it is hard to believe that he is gone. He was the beloved husband of Joyce Eppler (deceased) for 66 years. He will be sorely missed by his daughters Karen Sanchez-Eppler (and husband Benigno), and Amy Eppler-Epstein (and husband Steve) and by his grandchildren Elias (and wife Emily), Rebecca (and husband Steve and child Emery), Eppchez, and Ep-Ep (and partner Allison), and caregivers Gabriela Lacasa and artist-in-res- idence Sady Pineda. Interment private. A Zoom memorial service will be held on February 10th. Please make gifts in Klaus Eppler's memory to the New York County Lawyers Association.

it was wonderful to learn about Klaus“ life outside of NYCLA from the family during the shiva and we join you in mourning his loss. He was a wonderful role model and mentor for me and others at NYCLA and throughout the legal profession.
