LAWRENCE MALKIN Obituary

MALKIN--Lawrence. Larry Malkin spent a long career as correspondent, editor, and author. He died April 19 at home in Manhattan of kidney failure. He was 91. His energy, curiosity, and loyalty to those he loved will be more than missed by his wife of 62 years Edith (nee Stark), his daughters, Elisabeth (Eduardo Garcia) and Vic-toria (David Mikics), his grandchildren, Eva, Gabriel and Ariel. He reported on the Six-Day War for The Associated Press and the 1978 Afghanistan Revolution for Time Magazine. His dispatches on the 1960s decline of the British economy won an Overseas Press Club award. He wrote from Paris, London, New Delhi, Madrid, and Washington. He later covered Wall Street for The International Herald Tribune. As editor, he worked with former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker on his memoir "Changing Fortunes." He edited the memoir of Soviet Ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Dobrynin, "In Confidence," one of New York Times' ten best in 1995. He wrote "Krueger's Men," about the greatest counterfeit in history: The Nazis selected 140 Jewish prisoners to produce false pound notes in a concentration camp under SS orders. The book was translated into eight languages. Malkin worked with Stuart E. Eizenstat on "Imperfect Justice," an account of recovering blocked Holocaust accounts, and on "President Carter." He was born in Richmond Hill, Queens, son of David and Jennie. He is a 1951 graduate of Columbia University and a decorated veteran of the Korean War. His ashes will be placed in the citrus grove of the family's house in Deia, on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

I have very vivid memories of Mr. Malkin from my childhood in Chevy Chase. He was such a lively and engaging person and very much admired by my parents and all of us kids. My condolences to Elisabeth, Victoria, and Mrs. Malkin.

Dear Edith, Victoria and Elizabeth,
It is with great sadness that I discover Larry has left us. Cecillie Sheridan told me several days ago. As I haven´t lived in Deia now for twenty years I had lost contact. I have many, happy warm memories of Larry. I was particularly grateful when he and Edith put, Andre, my son up in their New York Apartment, on route to a summer job on Shelter Island. Every September when Larry and Edith came to Deia, we would eat together in one of the local restaurants and then Larry would return to New York and Edith would stay on and visit me. Victoria joined us for several Christmases in Deia and I had the good fortune to meet Elizabeth and her husband at their house in Mexico on route to Baja California to celebrate the Millenium. I have a website for the stone house I rent from time to time in my garden in soller Mallorca, through which you can contact me. www.orchardhousesoller.com. I would love to have Edith´s address as I have written a book that will be published next year and would like to send her a copy..
My warmest wishes to you all Love Judy King

We were colleagues in New Delhi in 1976, and became fine friends. He was loyal and fascinating and supportive and helpful, and one of my happiest memories of my time in South Asia has the pair of lying on the grass in the sun beside an ice-blue lake in an Afghanistan meadow, back in peaceful times, talking, talking, about the privilege of being correspondents in so fascinating a corner of the world. He loved the place, and that our friendship began there marked it out still as a very special place for both of us. Dear Larry: I shall never forget him.
