LAWRENCE NEWMAN Obituary

NEWMAN -- Lawrence Larry died peacefully at home on July 22, 2021, at the age of 90, surrounded by his family. Larry was the patriarch of the family and had a tremendous work ethic and moral compass. He was kind, gentle, quietly funny and thoughtful. There was no one more patient and understanding than Larry. Once you were part of his life, you could count on him for anything. His word was his bond. Larry attended DeWitt Clinton High School, then Dartmouth College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude. He studied at Yale Law School, where he was a member of The Yale Law Journal and The Order of the Coif. His profound love of learning - especially history, Jewish studies and the Yiddish language - continued throughout his life. Larry practiced Trusts and Estates Law for more than sixty years and was a partner at Kaye, Scholar, Fierman, Hays & Handler. He was a distinguished law professor at Columbia, Yale, Penn and Pace. Before walking into the room on the first day of class, Professor Newman had already memorized the names - and often birthdays - of his new students. He was beloved by generations of young lawyers and inspired those around him to push for equity and compassion in the law. Larry served on numerous boards and worked tirelessly for the causes he supported. He was a devoted Yankees fan and loved catching pregame baseballs. Fittingly, "Old Reliable," Tommy Heinrich, was his favorite player. Larry was a formidable chess player and was also quite the pool shark. Yet, everything in Larry's life paled in comparison to the love he had for his wife, Helaine. They shared sixty- seven beautiful years of marriage and created a wonderful life together full of warmth and happiness. Larry lived for his family - his brother-in-law and best friend Howard; his children Debbie, Danny (Shari) and Karen; his grandchildren Alex (Jill), Jenny, Hannah, Emily, Rachel, Samantha and Allison; and his great-grandchildren Jason and Jeremy. Larry had nieces, nephews and extended family whom he cared for as his own. He was a dear, lifelong friend to many. He would move mountains for the people he loved and never expected anything in return. Our annual vacations to Ogunquit will always remind us of his love of family, shuffleboard, lobster rolls and trips to the candy store. There aren't enough words to express how much Larry will be missed. He will continue to live on in our hearts, and we will forever be chasing the light he brought to all of our lives. A private service will be held.

Larry was the oldest of the three Newman brothers who lived in an apartment below ours on DeKalb Avenue, the Bronx. The youngest brother, Stanley, was my best friend and by the time Larry went off to Dartmouth he became our wise, older mentor. I recall that he sent us both Dartmouth football jerseys, which we wore proudly and regularly. When Stanley died so suddenly it was Larry who called me to his law office to discuss Stanley's life and death and what he meant to both of us. As the years passed, Larry went on with his brilliant law career and I pursued my own career. Years later when Larry was being honored by our alma mater, DeWitt Clinton HS, I got in touch to congratulate him. During our conversation he asked about my life and I mentioned that I had just had had a book published on the history of wartime baseball in Washington, D.C. Larry said he'd like to read it and after he bought a copy and had read it, he called me with a wonderfully laudatory response, which pleased me more than any reviewer's words could have done. With Larry's passing, all three Newman boys are gone now and, in truth, I knew Stanley and Howard better than I did Larry, I was deeply saddened by his passing at 90 a year ago. I will always remember his academic and legal acumen as well as his kind concern for me. He was truly a brilliant human being in every aspect of his life. My sincere condolences go out to his family once again on the anniversary of his passing.

I was so lucky to have known Larry, older brother of my best friend, Stanley. When Larry was at Dartmouth he sent both of us, young teens, Dartmouth football jerseys. We reconnected many years later and when he learned that I had recently published a book about wartime baseball in DC, he quickly bought a copy, read it, and called to tell me how well it was written and how much he enjoyed it. For me, that was high praise from a much admired brilliant mind. May his memory be a blessing. My sincere condolences to Helaine and family.

Condolences to the entire Newman family. Trying to find contact info for Larry's wife - Helaine. My mom was friends with her from Walton HS and wants to reach out.
A phone number for her would be greatly appreciated. THANKS

What a beautiful tribute to a remarkable man. Would that we all might have such a meaningful impact on the lives of so many, for so many good reasons. My deepest condolences to all, and especially to my dear friend and Dean Emeritus, Howard.

I met Larry at Kaye Scholer and later we both worked for Columbia (I was in the Office of the General Counsel until retirement in 2019). We had many lunches together at the Faculty Club. I was so sorry to read about his passing and offer my condolences.

As we say in Yiddish, "zol er hobn a likhtikn gan-eydn", may he be granted a sunny spot in Paradise. I read Lawrence's obituary in the NY Times and was wondering if our paths may have crossed at some point. Dewitt Clinton was near my home (Bainbridge Ave and 210 Street) and seeing how much he loved Yiddish, I'm wondering if he may have attended the Sholem Aleichem Folkshul 21 on Bainbridge Ave. as a child or if he knew about my youtube series, Yiddish Word of the Day. (I'm the editor of the Yiddish Forward.) I'd love to hear more about him from his family and friends! My email address is [email protected] or you can PM me on Facebook.
