LAWRENCE SLATTERY Obituary

SLATTERY--Lawrence J., died on February 17, 2022 after a long illness. Born and raised in Brooklyn and Queens, Larry graduated from Queens College and NYU Law School, joining his siblings Kevin and Patricia as the first in his family to attend college. While in high school, Larry traveled by subway to Manhattan to volunteer at John Lindsay's mayoral campaign headquarters. There, he began to develop his lifelong beliefs in social justice and democratic policies. A highly effective courtroom lawyer who practiced his profession with uncompromising skills and integrity, Larry began his career representing the less well-off, joining and growing Seven Tier Legal Services in Upstate New York, which continues to this day as Legal Services of Western New York. He returned to Manhattan to practice with Shearman & Sterling and the Trial Litigation Unit of Citibank, and was a partner at both Morgan Lewis and McDermott, Will & Emery. Outside family and practicing law, music, guitar, and golf were Larry's enduring passions. Larry also whole-heartedly volunteered for deep-rooted arts groups such as Hudson Valley Singers and the Music Conservatory of Westchester. Larry brought his enthusiasm to every person and activity in his life. He ably expressed his undying love to wife Judith through his self-composed songs and poems, and to his son Patrick and daughter Elizabeth through nightly lullabies and weekly classes in various artistic genres such as fine films, rock music, and operas. He was loved and admired by his extended family, friends, classmates, and colleagues for his good nature, constant optimism, unparalleled intellect, genuine warmth, unaffected charm, biting humor, and his ability to tell a really good story. He was generous to a fault with his time and everything else he had. Larry was a renaissance man in its truest sense. In his own words, he "had lived poetry".

He was one of the sweetest and most astute people I ever knew. He was fortunate (and knew it) to have such a wonderful wife and children. Very sad that he is not here to enjoy them.
