LAWRENCE WEINBACH Obituary

WEINBACH--Lawrence, (Larry) died suddenly on May 1, 2020 at the age of 80 as a result of a rare auto-immune disease. He is survived by Patricia, his beloved wife of 58 years; his three children, Wendy, Peter (Janine), and Danny (Julie) Weinbach; his four grandchildren, William, Max, Mirabelle and Eli, and his brother, Arthur (Joanne). Larry achieved much throughout his education, career and life. Raised in Waterbury, CT, he excelled in school and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School in 1961. He joined Arthur Andersen immediately after and worked his way through the ranks to become Managing Partner and chief executive of Andersen Worldwide from 1989 to 1997. He was chairman and chief executive officer of Unisys from 1997 to 2006. Most recently, he served as chairman of Great Western Products Holdings since 2009 and on the Board of Discover Financial Services as lead director from 2009 to 2018 and as independent chairman since January 2019. Larry's career achievements were overshadowed only by his personal accomplishments. He cared deeply about Pat and his immediate family, and enjoyed many long-term friendships, which were formed in all aspects of his life. He made a difference to those who knew him, as someone who was admired and truly liked. Larry was committed to helping others and was involved in numerous philanthropic activities including the Board of Carnegie Hall, Trustee of University of Pennsylvania, among others. His impact on those he touched will be long lasting. A virtual funeral will be held for the immediate family only, while a celebration of life may be considered later.

I was a Sammy brother of Larry's and remember him as an attractive and very friendly guy.. I followed many of his amazing accomplishments and have admired him from afar for many years.. I am so sorry for this great loss.

Larry was the best boss I've had. He always did the right thing, and in my experience that was a rare thing. That relationship morphed into a friendship over the years, and I loved our talks. We shared good movies and TV programs with each other. I'll miss those phone calls which he usually ended with: 'well, my friend....'

Larry and I were partners for many years at Arthur Andersen. I was a managing partner of the Columbus office for 15 years--I have fond memories of many communications with Larry during some of those years and serving with him on client and firmwide matters. One of my great treasures is his letter upon my retirement. He was a humble man in every respect and total class who thought straight and talked straight.

My sincerest condolences to the Weinbach family. I was a member of the PR team at Unisys during Larrys tenure and worked directly with him on many occasions. He was an exemplary leader and a personable man with strong communications skills who treated everyone regardless of status with courtesy and respect. May he rest in peace.

My former husband, Dick Badler, worked for Larry at Unisys. I have such fond memories of him. He was a smart, caring, gentle giant of a man who touched so many people. My heart goes out to the Weinbach family. Larry's memory and spirit lives on in all of you and all those whose lives he touched. Sincere condolences .

I have known several men of stature throughout my career but few have impressed me as much as Larry. For a man of Larrys caliber to sit down for a meal in rural Alabama with a wannabe like myself is a testament to his character and how down to earth he could be. He taught me well how to treat people properly and to always be above reproach. The sun shines a little less bright today.

Larry was the consummate partner and I shall always remember how he treated me with respect as I worked with him during the three years Arthur Andersen applied for the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Award. While I was a junior partner at the time, he never made me feel like I was his junior. When we would meet, he was always prepared providing great counsel to me personally and good feedback on the materials we were reviewing. And he was personable. On one occasion, I shared with him how I had lost my father to a heart attack when he was only 58 years old. Larry took the time to let me know that he had a similar experience when he lost his father to a heart attack also and his father was still a young man. I shall always remember Larry. My condolences to his wife and family.

A giant has fallen! Some partners we knew by name, face or just casually. Others, we knew from first-hand experience. I knew Larry during the good times and difficult times. He was always the same with me: a true professional who listened and talked straight. I have many fond memories involving this good man. He will be missed. My heartfelt sympathy to Pat and family. His partner, Simon Moughamian.
