LEILA DOSS Obituary
United Nations Assistant Secretary General, Broadcaster, Internationalist. Leila Doss was born in Assiut, Egypt in 1921, one of six siblings in a lively, international, culture-loving family. At the age of 23 she became the first ever female Egyptian broadcaster, an achievement which she followed with a distinguished career at the United Nations, retiring in 1982 as Assistant Secretary General. Until her death on 11 July 2016 Leila was a fearless and passionate champion of the United Nations and above all a champion of the principles of peace, equal rights and international cooperation on which it was founded. A celebration of Leila's life will take place on Sunday, 13 November 2016 11am-1pm at Church Center for the UN (CCUN), 777 UN Plaza, New York. RSVP: leiladossmemorial@ gmail.com.

A great mentor, a living history, a true friend, and she was the champion of women and children's rights. And she gave generously. Leila was not ready to die. She kept saying that there are children charities she supports that she has to continue with for a while longer. Days before her death, she went with her carer to a Broadway show, and then was admitted to hospital days later. The world is a better place because a Leila Doss was born and lived in it. Rest well.
