Leon Wynter Obituary

1953 - 2011
After a prolonged, but valiant struggle with brain cancer that first began on New Year's Eve going into 2009, Leon Earl Wynter passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2011. He was 57 years old.

He described himself as "first a Christian, then American and black by way of his Jamaican heritage." He is survived by his daughter Grace Alexandra, his mother Sylvia, and his brother Stephen. Leon is preceded in death by his sister Rochelle, and his father Rupert. He leaves behind his second wife Yvonne, the mother of Grace, and his first wife Karen, the great love of his life. He leaves several aunts, uncles, a nephew, and several cousins behind. He also leaves behind an abundance of those who knew him personally and loved him, as well as those who knew him professionally and respected him.

Born in 1953, Leon grew up in the Bronx, New York and was fond of saying that he arrived "just in time for most of the things that mattered: the space race, the triumph of the civil rights movement, disco, cable and the Macintosh computer."

Leon proudly received his undergraduate degree in Psychology from Yale in 1974, and his MBA in Economics from New York University's Stern School of Business in 1979.

After exploring the world of commercial banking, he entered journalism as a Washington Post staff reporter in 1980, where he covered education and racial change in suburban Prince George's County, Maryland.

He later joined the Wall Street Journal's Washington bureau in 1984, and covered the federal banking beat on Capitol Hill, as well as federal telecommunication and technology policy. He then created and wrote a monthly column for the Wall Street Journal called "Business & Race." He considered the title alone as a victory, and he wrote it for 10 years, from 1989 to 1999.

As a sought-after, public speaker, Leon shared his perspectives with strategic marketers at Time-Warner, Pepsico, Glaxo SmithKline, Cox Cable and the Strategic Research Institute. His commentaries on race, popular culture and "life observed" were frequently heard on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" beginning in 1993. He also published at least two dozen essays in newspapers and magazines including the Wall Street Journal, Savoy, the Washington Post and New York Newsday, among others.

His first book, "American Skin: Big Business, Pop Culture and the End of White America," was published in August 2002. The book was heralded with strong reviews in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, LA Times, San Francisco Chronicle and New York Times.

He followed that with yet another book in 2007 "…And I Haven't Had A Bad Day Since," the memoir of co-writer Representative Charles B. Rangel, of Harlem, chairman of the House Ways and Means committee. At some point during this affiliation, Leon would later accept a position with the Harlem Community Development Corporation where he served as Director of Communications.

He had more books in him… but it was not to be.

Leon was a treasured colleague and friend to all of us at the Wall Street Journal. He was brilliant, expressive and an original. I can vividly recall so many long phone conversations we had from time to time...it was a treat and a pleasure to hear Leon expound on politics, business, race, of course, and all the issues of the moment. He always enlightened and clarified and made me think harder...
My heartfelt condolences and love to Grace and to his family.

To Leon's family...
I've known Leon since his days at The Washington Post. We kept in touch periodically during the intervening deacdes and we not only reminisced about our days growing up in NY, but also addressed the myriad issues of the day. Funny, I always found myself marveling at Leon's continued evolution. With each encounter, I found him all the more brilliant, inquisitive, witty, intellectually curious, stimulating, thought-provoking and socially conscious. I always came away more enlightened - and challenged. Leon has left an indelible mark on so many, and for this I am grateful. May the Good Lord keep the Wynter family in His embrace. With deepest sympathy...

I came to know Leon in the newsroom of The Wall Street Journal. You couldn't miss him. He like myself stood at 6'6" He was an insightful man with an eclectic taste and a good wit and a passion for jazz and computers (Mac!) that eventually made me a convert. We also shared a common aspect of being grandsons of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, and often discussed the common aspects of our shared heritage as lived in the US and in the UK. Leon had a great way in both his conversation and writing of bringing that vital element - context. I will always remember him. My condolences to the Wynter family.

Here are a few things I know for sure about Leon - he was a wise and witty co-conspirator, an ever-encouraging presence to his fellow strivers and a marvelous writer. Above all that, he loved Grace so much. Words can't express how much I will miss him.

Leon lived in a room at the top of the stairs of my Yale entryway. But we shared more than that portal in common. We both hailed from the Bronx, shared Jamaican roots and iconoclastic takes on the world we observed from a relatively privileged perch. In later years, my graduate students were assigned American Skin, expanding their minds and Leon's bottom line. (Well, that's what friends are for.) That assignment always led to the semester's most thought provoking discussions. Who knows where the path of inquiry he started them on will lead? But in sparking those questions in the minds of others, he lives on.

May the Lord bless him and keep him and make his face to shine down upon his Grace for all the days of her life.

I first met Leon more than 20 years ago. He was an invited speaker at an event at Duke University. As you can imagine, he was insightful, thoughful, and deep. I appreciated his column in The WSJ. Many years later, we were to meet again on a Christian Retreat in Connecticut. Needless to say, it was a pleasure seeing him again. My deepest and sincerest sympathy to his many friends and family. Love and Appreciation to all of you.

My condolences go out to the family of Leon. Although I did not have the opportunity to interact with him often over the more than thirty years that I knew him, he always warm and friendly. He exuded a love of life and the intellectual curiosity that marked his professional career. I was always impressed by his willingness and ability to tackle a variety of somewhat controversial issues through his work. May the memories that you have of him serve to comfort you during your moments of sorrow.

My condolences to Leon's family. He was a "good brother" as we used to say in the Bronx. I really appreciated the fact that he stayed close to the community in thought, word and deed.

My love and sympathy are with his family. Since the first grade it was evident that Leon was a brilliant light in this world. I am proud to have known him and sad to know the world will not benefit from how much more he would have contributed.
