LEONA CHANIN Obituary

CHANIN--Leona F. December 23, 1918 - February 2, 2022. Leona Chanin, a philanthropist who supported higher education and a number of Jewish organizations, died February 2 at home in Palm Beach, FL. A Manhattan native, she moved permanently to Palm Beach several years ago. Mrs. Chanin was a former Senior Vice President of the American Jewish Congress and President of the organization's Women's Division. She and her husband, the late Marcy Chanin, a leading New York real estate executive, were honored with the Stephen Wise Award, its highest accolade. Mrs. Chanin was educated at Hunter High School and Hunter College in New York and was a dedicated supporter of Hunter College. Mrs. Chanin previously served as the President of the Hunter College President's Circle. The college awarded her an honorary doctorate and inducted her into their Hall of Fame. Together with her late husband, they endowed the Leona and Marcy Chanin Language Center. Mrs. Chanin with her late husband and brother-in-law Paul endowed the Paul R. and Marcy Chanin Genetic Engineering Building at Technion along with student dormitories. They also endowed a comprehensive high school. Mrs. Chanin is survived by son James B. Chanin (Rachel Richman) of Oakland, CA, Ann Gold of Los Angeles, CA and Nancy Chanin of Delray Beach, FL, grandchildren Rachel Chanin, Daniel Chanin, David Sneider, Sam Sneider, Jodie Sneider, Seth Gold, Sara Glazer, Marc Gold and Andrew Gold and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held in Boca Raton, FL on February 4 with interment in New York. Donations in her memory can be made to a charity of your choice.

Leona was an energetic, fun and warm friend of Naomi Levine and our family in NY, Greylock and Palm Beach. Her jokes and lively manner will be missed.
