LEONARD FLAX Obituary

FLAX--Leonard, owner of Sam Flax and Kate's Paperie, died on April 7, 2022, at the age of 94, still working until his final days. An industry pioneer, his stores were New York City institutions for almost a century. Sam Flax, with its iconic bold red serif logo, served artists and the advertising world with tools and materials. It was known for helping young painters, like Jackson Pollock, who offered to pay for supplies with his paintings. Kate's Paperie was the first store of its kind, a destination for beautiful papers, stationery and eclectic ephemera from around the world. His inventive store displays and merchandising set the aesthetic for the industry and beyond. Leonard lived his life like he ran his business, committed to innovation, creativity and exploration. Understated and gracious, with his signature neckerchief and gentlemanly manner, Leonard was most often found at trade shows and antique book fairs, on Fire Island with his family, or at Temple Emanu-El on high holidays, striking up conversation with anyone who crossed his path. Always interested in discovering the unexpected, his favorite section of the paper was the obituaries. His never-ending curiosity made him an unstoppable force from beginning to end. In his last hours he said, "I guess it's the end of the week, we have a lot to get done." Family meant the world to Leonard, and he will be greatly missed by sons Lionel (Jill) and Lowell (Sarah); and grandchildren William, Ottilie and Kate. A service will be held on Sunday, April 24 at 2pm at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street.

I worked for Leonard and David for many years, running their 28th street store until it's closing. I then managed Kate's Paperie for a few years. Leonard and David welcomed me as family and trained me accordingly. Sam Flax is very missed in NYC

All my condolences to the Flax family. I have often been in contact with Leonard while working with Press Book Prat company; he has been for me a mentor and a trend leader, always nice and gentle. Hello to Lionel, whom I met in Paris while he was student!

I remember in 2015 in Atlanta Georgia, I was having my annual "The Art of Stationery" workshop and I brought in the attendees to shop and just learn the history of Sam Flax... and the manager surprised me with a visit from Leonard. This moment was so special because this store is where I learned everything. When Leonard Flax found out I was a stationery designer he took me under his wings and would frequently call me to see what I was working on. He would give me tips and just educate me on the industry. His legacy will forever continue because every moment I get I will tell everyone about him. Such a beautiful soul that I am forever grateful to have met. Love you Leonard... you did what you came here to do now it´s time for you to rest well.

I will always remember Lenoard as a kind loving man . Always full of wisdom always smiling. So creative so smart . When I think of Lenoard I think of the silk scarf around his neck as to replace the common tie. He always spoke of his loving family. A devoted man to his family and friends. My thoughts are with his family.
Lenoard I know you will be missed
