Linda H. Lamel, passed away peacefully on December 5th after a valiant, three-year struggle against thymic cancer. Raised in both Brooklyn and Queens, she became a proud Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Queens College, NYU, and Brooklyn Law School. She became a pioneer of the women's movement and a leader of the insurance industry, specializing in regulation, solvency, life and health insurance, corporate governance, compliance, claims adjudication, and executive compensation. After government service, she worked in the insurance industry as a Vice President of TIAA-CREF, Executive Director of the Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS), CEO of Claims on Line, Inc. and as a consultant, trainer, and arbitrator. Ms. Lamel has served as a director of several insurance companies and most recently served on the board of Universal American Co. and American Progressive Insurance Co. and SCOR Reinsurance Co. In 1988, Ms. Lamel was selected as the Insurance Woman of the Year by the Association of Professional Insurance Women and in 2000 was selected by Crain's Business Insurance as one of the 100 Women Industry Leaders. Over the past 10 years, Ms. Lamel taught as Adjunct Professor of Insurance Law at Brooklyn Law School and as Adjunct Professor of Economics at Queens College. Ms. Lamel also served in leadership roles for many non-profit organizations, including but not limited to Phi Beta Kappa Society, the League of Women Voters, Hour Children (Astoria), Boy Scouts of Greater New York, Queens College Business Advisory Council, and President of the Alumni Association for Brooklyn Law School. Ms. Lamel enjoyed theater, travel, beaches and chocolate. She is survived by her daughter, Diana Sands, her sisters Donna Weintraub and Eileen Hill, her brother Jerry Treppel, and her mother, Sylvia Treppel, as well as friends and colleagues who will miss her bright mind and warm heart. Contributions may be made in her honor to Hour Children, Inc. A memorial celebration for Ms. Lamel will be scheduled for the spring in New York City.

I knew Linda from our involvement in "APIW". I always enjoyed her well-thought out, practical comments at our meetings. I got to know her personally from several dinner engagements in Manhattan. She had such a great mind and such a good heart. She was way ahead of her time and definitely passed too soon. She will surely be missed.

My deepest sympathy to the family of Linda Lamel. I'm truly shocked and so very sorry since Linda was so vital, smart and fund.
Every time I pass by 61st Street building where Linda lived and was a President of the co-op board I think of Linda and the fun times we had.
Linda will be truly missed and I'm so sorry.

My sister, Linda Newman, was friends with Linda for many years and often spoke glowingly about her. I finally had the privilege of meeting her myself and saw that everything my sister said was true. We met at the Water Club when we were celebrating my daughter's 20th birthday in May 2011. My daughter, Dana, was considering a career in law, and Linda was exceptionally kind to her. She listened to everything Dana had to say, answered her questions, and offered her valuable advice; in short, she treated her with kindness and respect. As two woman with daughters who meant everything in the world to us, Linda and I clearly had something in common! We kept in touch after that, and Linda was pleased to hear that my daughter was attending Harvard Law School. My thoughts and prayers to all of her family; we will always have the fondest memories of Linda.

Linda was a great friend to Queens College, and served here as the academic director of the Continuing Education program, as an advisor on the College's Business Advisory Board, as a professor of risk management, and as a proud alum. Linda was always looking for ways to help and to make connections, and doing so always selflessly. She was a role model for me and a wonderful person.
We will deeply miss her.

Linda was good friends with my aunt, Linda Newman, and I met her several times. She joined us for several family events, and she gave me valuable advice regarding my plans to apply to law school. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to meet her and that she was such good a good friend to my aunt.

Linda was a unique person. She was accomplished in so very many ways, which I and others admired so much. She had a profound intellect, and it was always a challenge to discuss the issues of the day with her. She was thoughtful, fun, kind, and caring, and had a very special love for her daughter Di. Those of us who had Linda in our lives were lucky people indeed. She comes to memory often and will continue to do so. Linda will forever be very much missed.

Linda was a most unusual person. Accomplished, smart, dedicated, a true advocate in so many issues, a great sense of humor, a wonderful friend. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. I was lucky. I met Linda in a most unusual setting. For one fateful year, Mayor Bloomberg decided to have business people on a fast track for high school principals. He later determined this did not work out. The year Linda was the principal of the High School for Leadership and Public Service, I was a literacy volunteer. Linda and I became friends and she later became my client. Just a chance meeting bloomed into a fabulous friendship. There are so many stories to share.

Linda and I share a first name and left handedness. We were at a luncheon of only left handed people a few years back. We were instructed to write our names on tent cards. I wrote Lefty Linda and Linda wrote Ditto. From that day on, we signed our e-mails and addressed each other that way.

On several occasions, Linda accompanied me to The Ronald McDonald House of New York, Inc.'s Annual Gala. A home away from home for children with cancer. We met frequently over the years and met each other's families. Many times, I read an article and I want to send it to Linda and I realize it is no longer possible.

Linda was always there for me during my illness. Her concern was always for other people. I consider myself a confidante of her's as well.

I am posting a picture of my family at The Water Club in May of 2011 when my niece graduated from college. Ditto was my invited guest and also counseled my niece about attending law school. Linda was so glad to hear that my niece just completed her first year at Harvard Law School.

I am posting another picture that Ditto sent me from her last year's visit to Diana in CA. I had the picture enlarged and sent it to Ditto, I asked for a photo of where it was in Ditto's apartment. I am attaching it.

Diana and I have stayed in touch all of these years and will continue to do so. Diana was made by Ditto and is a big part of her. I am so glad I had the opportunity for this fabulous friendship. Linda Ditto Lamel - you have "left" your mark and you will be missed.

I was honored and privaleged to work beside Linda in the mid-90's when we started the Insurance Broadcast System. She was a leader then and a woman of great personal warmth and insight. She recently joined us once again as a Board Member for World Risk and Insurance News and she always lit up the room whenever she joined us in a meeting. Her spirit will live on and will serve as an inspiration to all of us.

While I did not really know Linda during our joint tenure at TIAA-CREF, I did get to know her in recent years given our mutual activities on Corporate Boards, Board symposia, etc. To my delight, I found Linda to be an extraordinarily engaging woman - smart, high energy, charming ( of course, it did help that we shared so many common views!). We enjoyed several wonderful lunches, but had in the last 18 months or so, lost touch, and I remarked just last month to a friend ( and former TIAA-CREF colleague), that we needed to get back in touch with Linda and reignite our periodic lunches. How shocked I was to read her NYT obituary !! She wore her impressive lifetime accomplishments with grace and humility. Although I cannot be included among those who knew her for a good part of her lifetime, I will miss her. I do hope that I will learn of her Memorial service to be held later this year. Rest in peace, Linda.

I knew Linda at the Insurance Department. In 1977, the thought of a Feminist and Consumerist becoming a Deputy was unsettling to some old-timers. Linda was those things, and we found out that, more important, she was smart and nice. I was happy to see her at NYSID alumni events over the years. My deep sympathies to you.

My Mom made me. She used to always tease me with that, but now it's my greatest source of pride and resilience.

Thank you to the wonderful folks here who took the time to sign this virtual guestbook. Your notes are incredibly profound for me and others to see and share in mourning our loss of this radiant woman. I am so grateful and I do treasure your messages for my Mom.

Linda will forever be in my heart, my mind and my soul. One of the strongest, yet most gentle, women I've ever known, and how lucky am I that she was my first cousin. This photo taken was right after Linda lit a candle for her uncle, my father, the grandfather my son never met, but knew through his family. Linda made a cross-country trip to make my son's Bar Mitzvah. Incredible that she did that. Incredible was Linda.

My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Linda Lamel. As the days and years pass, may you be left with only happy memories of your lives together. I was privileged to have worked with her first at The College of Insurance (now St. John's) and then at the Risk and Insurance Management Society. We worked together to create a collaboration between Queens College and NYSSA for the benefit of those studying for the CFA. She was a steadfast colleague and professional friend always with the looking out for the welfare of others.

My condolences for your loss. Life is so short and those we love are gone from our lives too quickly. God's promise to empty the grave in the near future is found at Hosea 13:14. May the God of loyal love comfort you during your time of sorrow.
