LOIS NYREN Obituary

NYREN--Lois. Lois Nyren, much beloved, died on November 24, 2023, at the age of 73, after complications from emergency heart surgery. Born in Chicago, an alumna of Brandeis University and the Bank Street College of Education, Lois devoted her life to three passions: her love of teaching, of Judaism, and of her family. The first took her from the Boston public schools to New York's Trinity, UNIS, and Ramaz schools, where she retired as head of the Ramaz Middle School and head of its science department. She also gave acclaimed science presentations at schools all around New York City and at national science education conferences. The second brought her to Temple Shaaray Tefila, where she served for decades on its Board of Trustees, and six years as its president, leading by persuasion and dialogue, convincing people of what was right, and making it seem like it was their own idea. She also served for many years until her death on the North American Board of the Union for Reform Judaism, where she counseled synagogues around the country on a wide variety of matters, and was much respected. The third was her greatest passion: her husband of 53 years, Neil; her sister, Ruth; her adored son, Alex, and daughter-in-law, Kim; and her wonderful grandchildren, Lily and Nate. Lois will be keenly missed by all of them. She left the world a better place. Donations can be made in her name to the Union for Reform Judaism or Temple Shaaray Tefila.

Lois was so beautiful in her purple mini wedding dress. I still see her as that young and committed.

I worked with Lois at Ramaz for 20 years until 2019. Lois was a passionate educator, a loyal friend and a dedicated colleague. Lois was carrying him compassionate. She is the one who sent birth birthday wishes to each person in the Faculty every year. Lois had a great sense of humor and a witty commentary for every scenario. She will be greatly missed. I only had the pleasure of meeting Lois once, at the wedding of Kari to my brother, Scott. Lois was very supportive and loving and an important part of Kari´s life. I know she will be missed.
