LOIS STAMBERG

STAMBERG--Lois,

nee Silverstein Aboff, age 97, passed away peacefully at home in Manhattan on December 23 surrounded by her family. Devoted wife of the late Melvin Stamberg, she is survived by her adoring and adored children and spouses, Jill Jarnow (Allen Farbman) and Peter Stamberg (Paul Aferiat) as well as grandson Jesse Jarnow (Caitlin Ervin) of whom she was especially proud. Her dear brother Herb Aboff (Winnie) and their families also survive her, as do a remarkable surrogate family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. New York City-born in 1920, she graduated from Brooklyn College and Columbia University and had a lifelong commitment to social justice. She worked for the Bureau of Labor Statistics during WWII to help ensure fair pay for all Americans. After teaching English, she became a dedicated guidance counselor at Huntington High. Her ability to understand individual needs enabled her to help students overcome challenges to meet their full potential. This instinct also touched an extraordinary group of friends. First Lady of Seaview, Fire Island for many years, she helped shape the path of the growing community. We will all miss her.
