LYNN ST. JOHN Obituary

ST. JOHN--Lynn. Died on April 2, 2021 at the age of 86. A resident of Sag Harbor, he began an advertising and editorial photography career after seeing a photograph Irving Penn shot for Vogue in 1949 of a sleeping woman blurred behind a window screen upon which stood a sharply in-focus fly. The choice to feature the fly instead of the model inspired St. John, at the age of 18, to travel from Detroit to New York, knock on the famed photographer's door, and ask for a job. Having learned the trade and risen to studio manager, he soon went out on his own. For the next four decades, while living in Manhattan then London, he shot work for clients as diverse as Estee Lauder, Jello, Cuisine, Volvo and Heinz for whom he won a Cannes Gold Lion. He saw the world through a brilliant eye, told wonderful stories, and encouraged both his daughters to reach for the stars. His family requests that donations in his memory be made to The Humane Society of New York.

I am sorry to learn of the lost of Lynn, I was his last studio manager and share his studio on a gentlemen´s agreement. He was a great Photographer and I learned great deal from him about photography and life. Lynn would say "Perfection is the enemy of what´s good, when we blind ourselves seeking the perfect; we miss all of this heavenly beauty." He loved my chicken soup with homemade dumplings. I would never be the photographer I am without his help and guidance.

So sorry to hear. I worked for him as a photo assistant 1986-1988. He didn't like me as much as I wanted him to (he threatened to fire me and gave me a raise in the same week), but I think of his sense of style often, to the point where over the years I thought to reach out to him and say hello, and yet I didn't, and then I found this today. At the time he was preoccupied with a dismantled house, moved from Upstate, and reassembling it in the Hamptons. "Perfect is the enemy of good" was the phrase he would say when figuring out how he wanted the foundation stone cut, which wobbly window glass to use, or other tiny details. Funny, today I searched for him bc of a mention of a sailboat named Ondine. Lynn told me that his studio (308 E 59) was once one of NYCs first discotheques called Ondine, and where the Doors first played in NYC.
Sorry for your loss Paige & Whitney.
