M. BEAL Obituary

BEAL--M. Flint. Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork- Presbyterian are profoundly saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague Dr. M. Flint Beal, former chair of the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medicine, and neurologist-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Beal, who until his passing was the University Professor of Neuroscience in the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute at Weill Cornell Medicine, was an internationally recognized leader in neurology and neurodegenerative disorders and one of the greatest clinician-scientists of his generation. Dr. Beal was recruited from Harvard Medical School in 1998 to lead the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience and served in that role until 2012. Under his leadership, Dr. Beal greatly expanded the department's scientific enterprise and recruited leading neuroscientists to conduct high-impact research while enhancing the institutions' reputation for clinical neurologic care. He had an outstanding bedside manner, which he eagerly demonstrated to medical students and neurology residents. He also had an encyclopedic knowledge of classical clinical neurology and was equally proficient in foundational neuroscience; his some 600 journal articles were cited by other scientists nearly 115,000 times. He received numerous awards and honors for his exemplary achievements, including membership in the National Academy of Medicine. A devoted scientist, clinician, educator and mentor, Dr. Beal has left an indelible mark on Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian, and he will be greatly missed. Our heartfelt condolences to his former wife Judy; their children Bradley and Emily and their respective spouses Erin and Andre; their four grandchildren; Dr. Beal's four sisters; and their extended family and friends. My last memory of Flint Beal is when h was 9 years old. I had cared for him ad his three sisters, Becky, Shelley and Christine in the late 50s when we lived on the same street in Rochester, NY on Vick Park A. He was a mischievous boy who loved "The Lone Ranger
" on Saturday mornings.

Dr. Beal was so kind and generous, a real gentleman. He was a visionary clinician-scientist and a cherished teacher. Words fail to express our profound grief. This is such a huge loss to the international scientific community. May God rest his soul in peace and give strength to the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss. – Drs.
