MALCOLM MOORE Obituary

MOORE--Malcolm A.S. It is with a heavy heart that we mark the passing of Malcolm A.S. Moore, DPhil, Emeritus Member of the Cell Biology Program in the Sloan Kettering Institute, on September 23 in New York City. Dr. Moore's storied career was characterized by pivotal contributions to the fields of hematology and cell biology, including work that led to the development of the drug filgrastim (marketed as Neupogen and Neulasta). Dr. Moore came to MSK in 1974 to serve as the Enid A. Haupt Chair of Cell Biology. In 1984, he and Karl Welte, a member of his lab, isolated the protein in human cells that stimulates new blood cell growth, leading to the development of filgrastim. This discovery was named a "Major Cancer Milestone" by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). The drug, which stimulates the production of white blood cells in people with low counts -- often as a side effect of chemotherapy -- has helped boost the immune systems of more than three million people globally. Born in 1944 in the U.K., Dr. Moore earned his doctorate from the University of Oxford in 1967. During his time there, he was named a Prize Fellow at Magdalen College, Oxford. After graduating, Dr. Moore moved to Melbourne, Australia, where he served as a Queen Elizabeth II Visiting Fellow and then a Senior Research Scientist and Head of the Laboratory of Developmental Biology at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research until he came to MSK. Dr. Moore was the recipient of prestigious awards like the William B. Coley Award for Basic and Tumor Immunology, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cancer Research and Treatment Fund, and the C. Chester Stock Award. He chaired or served on the boards of many well-regarded organizations and was a member of a number of renowned national and international societies. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Moore's family, including his wife Francine, as well as his friends and colleagues. Selwyn M. Vickers, MD, FACS, President and CEO of MSK Joan Massague, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer of MSK and Director of the Sloan Kettering Institute Jeffrey Drebin, MD, PhD, Chief Physician Executive of MSK
