Margo Feiden Obituary

1944 - 2022
Margo Feiden died Saturday, April 4 in Greenwich Village after suffering lengthy complications from a fall. She was 77.

Born in NYC on December 2, 1944 to Jewel Eliasberg Feiden and Joseph Feiden. At age 16 she became a Broadway producer, director, and author, and later earned her pilots license before she began representing and performing with mystic and mentalist Kuda Bux. She earned degrees from Hofstra, NYU, and the Sorbonne. In 1969 she established an art gallery that was to become one of the most prolific female-owned galleries in the city. Margo Feiden Galleries Ltd exhibited the original drawings and limited edition prints of artist Al Hirschfeld, and Ms. Feiden became Hirschfeld's representative for several decades.

Ms. Feiden is survived by two children, Bambi Goldmark and Jeremy Rosen.

She will be buried at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 8 in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Queens next to her late husband, Julius Cohen, whom she loved dearly.

She could never acknowledge the relationship between our family and Al Hirschfeld. We are from St. Louis where Al was also born. Al and my father in law looked like twins. I think she was fearful of any competition.

Margo was a force of nature. Passionate, courageous, loyal, an innovative thinker. She is missed and remember how much she loved Jeremy and Bambi.

From a chance meeting at the entrance to the James Madison High School auditorium, I got to know the young Margo Feiden.

Margo had the gift of banter, and she could engage an unsuspecting person with charm. Her success as a business woman most likely sprang from the ease with which she established relationships.

I asked this special lady to go out with me after a couple of week, suggesting that we see a local movie and, perhaps, have a dish of ice cream afterwards.

Our movie and our ice cream did not materialize, for the young lady was far more interested in seeing who was out and about on Kings Highway. We walked the entire length of the road and all the way back, and Margo enjoyed herself immensely as she recognized acquaintances along our way.

Margo Eden, as she dreamed her name might be in years to come as a performer, was a people person, and her fame was of a different kind. I am certain that she brought joy to others through the adornments that she provided in her gallery.

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Margo - in person, at her gallery (which was something of an impeccably maintained time capsule) - when my partner set up a meeting with her as a birthday present to me for showing great interest in Hirshfeld´s work. During our visit, that evening we had tea, appetizers - and a dose of pure nostalgia of which completely swept me off both feet. Despite me not knowing too much about Al Hirshfeld himself, after leaving her gallery, in addition to a joker-like wide smile, I left the gallery as if I met him person. In fact, I got to see his barber´s chair :)

But back to Margo: What a lovely person who made me feel so welcomed into her home, and that something spiritually lead me back to her...but to discover that she recently passed on... She will be truly missed. Such a lady.

My sincerest condolences to the family & friends.. The world is sadder with the loss of Margo Feidan. I met her in her gallery while completing a purchase. I felt like I gained a friend. She will always be remembered as a great creative, imaginative unique person.
