MARK SCHMOOCKLER Obituary

SCHMOOCKLER--Mark. The New York Philharmonic deeply mourns the passing of Mark Schmoockler, a member of the Orchestra's violin section from 1974 to 2018. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, he attended the New York Philharmonic's 1959 concert in Moscow, led by Leonard Bernstein, a moment he later called "an ear-opener." After emigrating to Israel in 1972 and joining the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Schmoockler moved to New York the following year. On retiring from his 44-year NY Phil tenure, he said that he loved everything about being in the Philharmonic -- the tours, the rapport, the concerts day in and day out, and that the best part was "the feeling when a concert comes out well, which is phenomenal enjoyment." The Philharmonic extends condolences to his wife, Lydia, and their son, Mark Kasakevich. On behalf of the Musicians, Board, and Staff of the New York Philharmonic
