MARK SORENSEN Obituary

SORENSEN--Mark F. June 9, 1958 - January 16, 2023. Dr. Mark Francis Sorensen of New York, NY, died on Monday, January 16, 2023, peacefully at home after battling prostate cancer with courage and grace for four years. Mark was a devoted husband and son and a beloved uncle to eight nieces and nephews. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Dr. Meriamne Singer; his mother, Vera Sorensen; and three siblings, Paula Lucore (Chuck); David (Beth); and John (Lisa); his brothers-in-law, Dan (Cath) and Rick Singer; and eight nieces and nephews, Eric (Elise), Emily, and Anna Sorensen; Jordan and Christopher Lucore; and Jake, Maddie, and Nick Singer. He was predeceased by his father, Dr. Frank C. Sorensen, and his nephew, Alex Lucore. Mark was born in Elmhurst, NY, and grew up in Rockville Centre on Long Island. He graduated from Duke University with high honors in 1980 and from medical school at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1984. He continued his studies as a resident at the Psychiatric Institute and was certified as a psychoanalyst. Mark joined the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center faculty in 1994. He directed the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center residency training program for more than 20 years. Over his career, Mark gathered accolades and teaching awards and supervised numerous clinicians. While fighting cancer, Mark developed a love of poetry -- reading poetry and writing his own. Through his writing, he tried making sense of the challenges he faced and to show his appreciation for life. In short, Mark graced all the people he loved with his generous spirit, his good humor, and his love of science and history. Family members often joked that the best way to learn about their own city and its history was to invite Mark for a visit. He was a storyteller at heart and a curious and patient listener. His whole life, from beginning to end, was a celebration of love. Mark will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and colleagues. A visitation will be held from 3-7pm Sunday, January 22, 2023, at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home at 1076 Madison Avenue. The funeral service is at 12 noon on Monday, January 23, 2023, at the funeral home chapel. In lieu of flowers, if you're interested in contributing to the Mark F. Sorensen Fund for Education in Public Psychiatry, please leave your email address at: [email protected] and someone will contact you with further details shortly.

Dr S as we called him touched the life of our son Peter in so many ways and my husband and I received such warmth and support from Dr S. We feel much sadness now and a great loss but are relieved that his painful struggle with cancer has ended. Dr S will forever be in our hearts. Only wish I had been able to say goodbye Joan Dreux, Arlington, VA
