MARSHALL ARISMAN Obituary

ARISMAN--Marshall. Marshall Arisman, chairperson and founder of the School of Visual Arts (SVA NYC) MFA Illustration As Visual Essay program since 1984, a respected artist, illustrator, filmmaker and author, died suddenly of heart failure on April 22. "A deeply and widely beloved figure, Marshall's influence has been much greater than a succession of important roles," writes David Rhodes, President of SVA. "A singular, protean figure in his profession, his editorial illustration is instantly recognizable and universally admired, his painting and sculpture provided spiritual context throughout. His rich deep voice was full of stories; whether he was speaking just to you or to a packed auditorium he was simultaneously modest and mesmerizing, and the story might somehow morph into a saxophone solo." Arisman contributed illustrations to the New York Times Magazine, OpEd Page, Book Review, Time, Playboy, The Progressive, among others and illustrated posters, books and publications. His paintings, prints, sculptures and drawings are in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the National Museum of American Art and the Smithsonian Institution, as well as private and corporate collections. He is an inductee in the Art Directors and Society of Illustrators Halls of Fame and, among many inspirational videos, he is the subject of a full-length documentary film directed by Tony Silver titled Facing the Audience: The Arts of Marshall Arisman. Born in Jamestown, New York, on October 14, 1938, he graduated in 1960 from Pratt Institute with a degree in Graphic Design. Afterward he worked at GM for three months in Experimental Graphic Design Program on the Delco battery logo. He started teaching drawing at SVA in 1964 and was named Chair of the Design & Illustration Department in 1967. In 1970, as SVA moved to the awarding of degrees, Arisman became Co-Chair of the Media Arts Department. Arisman is survived by his wife Dee Ito; they married in 1964. His parents Helen Alexis Arisman, Walter Arisman and brother Bruce Arisman are deceased. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Joel and Joyce Ito, their children and grandchildren. "Marshall's passing impacts generations of his students--those many shelves of their [illustrated] books always made him proud," adds President Rhodes, "as well as generations of colleagues who will remember his grace and generosity." photo: danwagner.com

Thank you Marshall for setting me on the course back in 1984, and being brutally honest with me - you continue to live in our hearts and memories.

Marshall was instructor of mine at SVA back in the 60's. I think I was in one of the 1st classes he taught. It
was more of story telling than teaching. Funny stories
what it was like being an illustrator, showing us pictures he did for menu's and the absurdity of it all.
Getting to know him a bit, went to his apartment on the upper west side and saw his studio , which was part of him and Dee's living room --a partitioned off section wrapped in clear plastic where he was spray painting these human like shapes made out of folded
screen. A far cry from those clown drawings he did for those menu's. After telling a story or a thought he would often end it with " does that make sense ? For a man of such talents and wisdom to be so humble always struck me as being so wonderfully human.
I miss hearing him.

As a '60 Pratt grad (FashDes), who had been active in student government, I worked with and knew Marsh in those days. Although our paths haven't crossed in the intervening years, I was happy for his success and sad to learn that he has died. My condolences to his family.
Warmly

So sad to hear of Marsh's passing. Many fond memories of art class at Jamestown High School.
A man of many talents. He entertained with his small
band playing at high school functions and various
venues. Rest in peace my friend.

I am so saddened to hear about Marshall´s passing.I had Marshall as a teacher back in 1980.He taught the history of illustration. The class was so inspiring and loved by the student´s.It was never boring ! He was a great speaker and knew his stuff. He also was well liked by his peers. I can remember Marshall having R. Crumb speak and show his work to the class. What a thrill ! I later ended up teaching at SVA and would see him on occasion. It was always great to see him. I´m sorry for his loss.

I loved listening to Marshall's lifetime of tales. He was such an inspiration and to this day, I'm confident that he informs every piece of art I make. I love how adventurous he was and how effortless he made art and storytelling appear (I know it was really hard). He and Dee were a terrific couple. We lost a giant. Marshall had a lot of crazy ideas about the spiritual realm. I hope one day to get to speak with him again and compare notes on what he got right. My heart goes out to Dee and those closest to Marshall. I know you'll go on with a hole in your heart, but do please keep moving forward and celebrating everything good that Marshall loved.

Marshall played a huge part in my artistic progression. He was not just an exceptional artist but he was personally so inspiring with his generous encouragement to me. I often recall the time he and Dee were visiting my parents and I was struggling at the Slade, he helped me through a tough time to see again the joy and excitement in painting. It was a pivotal moment for me for which I will always be grateful. I feel lucky to have known Marshall and just wish I could have seen more of him. I will miss him.
