MARSHALL ROSE Obituary

ROSE--Marshall. Beloved father, husband, and friend, died peacefully at home in the early hours of February 15th, surrounded by loved ones. After many years of extraordinary strength and resilience, he passed from complications with Parkinson's disease. He was 88 years old. He is survived by his wife Candice; his children Wendi and Andrew; his step-daughter Chloe; and his grandchildren Alexander, Clio, Ell, Milo, Arthur, and Alice. He is predeceased by his parents Jack and Jean, his brother Robert, and his late wife Jill. His dedication to New York City and the people who live there guided his career, philanthropy, and personal life. Born in Brighton Beach in 1937, Marshall spent his life in New York: he studied economics at City College, received a law degree from NYU, and later an honorary degree from CUNY. A real estate developer, active civic leader, and trusted advisor to non-profit institutions, Marshall founded The Georgetown Company in 1978 which went on to oversee the development of pioneering residential, commercial, and mixed-use properties, including Frank Gehry's iconic IAC building and the renovation of Madison Square Garden. Marshall dedicated the second part of his professional life to civic and philanthropic work that shaped the landscape of New York City, including the pro bono development of three charter schools and service on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations. Marshall's proudest contribution was his thirty-year tenure on the board of the New York Public Library including two terms as chairman where he spearheaded the creation of the Science, Industry and Business Library; the renovation of the main reading room in the flagship 42nd street branch; and the revitalization of Bryant Park. Marshall was a profoundly good man. Friends and colleagues looked to him as a mentor, and he consistently modeled a life worth emulating. His effortless gravitas paired with his quick humor and genuine respect for all individuals made him a gifted and compelling leader. A dedicated father and grandfather, Marshall had high expectations for those around him. As a doting dogfather to his beloved goldendoodle Jerry, he instilled similarly high expectations. His family carries on his legacy of fierce compassion, stubborn persistence, and commitment to cheering on the Knicks. His wisdom, strength, and generosity of spirit will be remembered by the countless people whose lives he touched. The funeral will take place at Central Synagogue on Tuesday, February 18th, at 12pm. In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate a donation to the New York Public Library, an institution he loved so dearly. Any gifts given in his honor (nypl.org/memorial) will be earmarked for adult literacy programs at branches across the five boroughs. Checks can be mailed to: The New York Public Library 270 Madison Avenue, 12th Floor, New York, NY 10016 (please include Marshall Rose's name in the memo of the check).

I had the pleasure of tutoring Wendi and Andrew in French at Jill and Marshall's magnificent estate in Kings Point. The children and Jill were beyond delightful and I remember showing the children how to bake a souffle! We lost touch when my husband and I relocated to Cleveland but I still remember those two sweet faces helping to cook that souffle!

Marshall was a partner of Mort Olshan's in 99 Hudson Street. I worked for Mort and was the owner's rep on that building. The team came up with a plan to convert an old printers' building to a Class B office building. I reported to the partners and had dealings with Marshall. He was always supportive and a class act. When we finished the project Marshall wrote me a very kind note complimenting me on the work I had done for the partnership. Sad to hear that he had been dealing with Parkinson's and that he has passed away.

My grandparents and Marshall´s cousins - Nat and Bev Gershon - shared a story with me about Marshall that meant so much to them. Many years ago my grandparents were invited to a party hosted by Marshall and his late wife Jill. My grandparents were told the dress code was "casual" and so they showed up in blue jeans. They immediately realised just how under-dressed they were and felt terribly embarrassed and out of place. Marshall saw their discomfort, excused himself, and returned sometime later wearing blue jeans. Just to make my grandparents feel more at ease. That gracious gesture meant so much to his cousins that they retold the story to me decades later. Thank you for your kindness.
