Marvin Bierenbaum Obituary

BIERENBAUM--Marvin Leonard, M.D., 81 of Newark and West Orange, NJ died peacefully on January 28 after a prolonged struggle with Parkinson's disease. Beloved husband of Nettie; loving and cherished father of daughter Dr. Michele Reichstein and her husband Robert, and son Robert; adoring grandfather of Dr. David Reichstein, Matthew Reichstein, Jonathan Reichstein and Annah Bierenbaum; loving brother of Bernice. Born on August 30, 1926, World War II veteran, graduate of Rutgers University (summa cum laude) and Hahneman Medical School. An astute and compassionate physician, after he established a medical practice in Montclair, NJ, he founded the Kenneth L. Jordan Heart Research foundation in honor of a colleague who died prematurely from heart disease. Over the next four decades, he authored over 150 journal articles and lectured around the world in epidemiology and arteriosclerosis research. His was among the earliest voices calling attention to the harmful effects of cigarette smoking and obesity and he produced seminal research establishing the long-term benefits of a low-fat, lowcholesterol diet. A tireless and enthusiastic public servant, he worked in government for 25 years at the state and national level for the Social Security Administration as Regional Director. That his life was full of accomplishments was a tribute to his intellectual curiosity fueled by boundless energy. But to his family and friends, he was warm and loyal beyond measure, quick to flash a broad smile and endearing giggle, a mesmerizing raconteur who shared his worldly perspectives without braggadocio, an avid and accomplished tennis and bridge player whose favorite game was anywhere he could root for one of his grandchildren, a cherished patriarch and mentor whose loving memory will never cease to inspire. Funeral will be held at Menorah Chapel, 2800 Vauxhall Rd., Union, NJ on Tuesday January 29 at 1:00 pm.

Dear Mrs. Bierenbaum and Family,

I am truly sorry to hear about the passing of Doctor Bierenbaum. He was a very special person and it was both a pleasure and honor to have worked with him. He had such a great sense of humor and that got us through some very hectic days at 345 Claremont Ave. He treated his patients with such compassion and genuine concern for their health. All his patients adored him and he made their "doctor visits" seem like they were visiting a friend. Even when he got mad at them for not stopping smoking or sticking to their diet, they still came back for the next visit because they knew he really cared. He and Dr. Raichelson shared a very special partnership and this was very beneficial to the patients. I don't think a practice like that will ever exist again. During my years working with him from 1977 until he retired, I learned so much and it was a priviledge to have had the opportunity to work with a man of his stature. We all worked so well together and enjoyed each day. I will always cherish those memories. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

My deepest sympathies,

Angela Abraham (Petronecci)

Dear Nettie and entire Bierenbaum Family,

The passing of Marvin aggrieved all in the Silverman family.

As physician and friend Marvin proved himself a real mensch. He was a gentleman, thoughtful, and kind. All who knew him and his work in medical research and practice were proud to call him a friend. Marvin's prodigious and prestigious accomplishments speak most warmly of his outstanding acumen.

Marvin's steadfast interest in Mildred during her prolonged malignancy gave me ongoing sustenance. He was truly a friend and medical practitioner deeply interested and concerned with his patients and an honor to the medical profession.

We wish him godspeed to God's heavenly realm.

Dear Nettie,
In addition to sending you and your family my deepest sympathy, please know that my heart is filled with the warmest memories of Dr. Bierenbaum.

From his velvet voice, to his infecteous giggle,to his soft eyes peering over his glasses, I will forever hold dear the warmth and generosity of spirit he had on my life and especially on the lives of my parents.

During this time of great loss, take comfort in the countless lives he touched in magical ways that eclipsed the practice of medicine.

Dear Nettie, you were truly the light that brightened his life and the music that orchestrated his spirit. My prayer is for you to find peace, comfort and joy; allow your family and friends to surround you with the love and kindness that you have so generously shared with him.
