MARVIN CHIRELSTEIN Obituary

CHIRELSTEIN--Marvin A.,

died on February 16th of heart failure. Born on October 8, 1928, Marvin went on to become one of the most famous tax law professors of his time. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1950; and then from the University of Chicago Law School in 1953, where he was editor-in-chief of the Chicago Law Review. After practicing in Washington D.C., and New York City, Marvin joined the Yale Law School faculty in 1965 where he remained until 1981 as the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law. He was a visiting professor at Harvard in 1976-77, and at Columbia in 1981-82. After a brief period in private practice, Marvin joined the Columbia faculty in 1984. A legendary teacher, Marvin taught federal taxation, corporate finance, and contracts. His texts on federal income taxation and contracts are widely used. He is survived by his loving wife Ellen and their son Paul. Services will be private.

I am so sad that Marvin has passed away. I was lucky enough to become a friend over the last several years and will miss him very much. My thoughts and love go out to Ellen and Paul.
